The tournament has become very popular with cricket fans
The third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 20-20 cricket tournament, is due to begin amid heavy security in the city of Mumbai.
Eight teams are participating in the tournament which has been overshadowed by security concerns - IPL authorities have defended the arrangements.
Hyderabad, which won the second season, will take on Calcutta in the first of 60 matches in the 43-day tournament.
The world's top cricketers are taking part in the lucrative tournament.
BBC Sports Alex Capstick in Mumbai (Bombay) says the brash and glitzy IPL has become a multi billion dollar industry and an established event in the cricket calendar in just two years.
Bollywood owners
The games are marked by entertainment on the field, including Bollywood music and cheerleaders for the teams. Some tickets cost up to 50,000 rupees ($1,100), and film screens show the games.
The Calcutta team, owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, has won only nine of the out the 28 previous IPL matches, and begin as underdogs in Friday night's game.
The Hyderabad team, which finished last in the opening season, emerged as the surprise winners in the second season, which was played in South Africa because of security concerns at home.
There are eight English players in this season's IPL - Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Eoin Morgan, who miss the first three weeks because of the Bangladesh tour, and Graham Napier, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Owais Shah, Michael Lumb and Ravi Bopara, who will be there for the duration.
Security threats
The third season of the tournament has been overshadowed by concerns over security and a controversy over the non-inclusion of Pakistani players in any of the eight teams.
A news website had published a message reported to be from the 313 Brigade, an operational arm of al-Qaeda, that threatened the IPL, Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup, all of which are being held in India.
This followed a threat against Australian players competing in the IPL from the right-wing Hindu group Shiv Sena.
IPL authorities have said that everything was being done to make the tournament secure, although they conceded that "nobody in the world can safeguard the safety of the players in any tournament."
IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has told BBC Sport the threat from Shiv Sena had been withdrawn and he defended security arrangements for the IPL.

BSNL Unlimited EV-DO Gets Cheaper

Posted by blog master

BSNL has announced the launch of a promotional plan that will allow users to avail its EV-DO based broadband connection

at a discounted price of Rs. 750 per month. The same service cost users Rs. 999 per month until now.

The plan offers "unlimited" data usage with a maximum speed of 3.1 Mbps. This plan has been extended for existing as well as new users. However, you might want to act quickly because this offer is only valid for those who apply for it before March 31, 2010. There is one catch though - this service comes with a fair usage policy - which means that if you exceed a limit prescribed by BSNL, you would be liable to paying Rs. 0.50 per MB. This, mind you, is by no means cheap!

BSNL's EV-DO service is available in only select towns across India and uses a CDMA based 3G technology. It is unclear as to how many cities currently serviced by BSNL's EV-DO service will get these new tariffs. If your town was already under the EV-DO network, you might want to get in touch with your local BSNL telephone exchange to find out if you can get a new connection with this plan - or simply change your plan to this new one.

HTC will start volume shipments of its feature phone, the HTC Smart, to major markets in Europe and Asia at the end of March 2010, according to industry sources. The company actually began to ship the HTC Smart phones to India recently to test the water with an unlocked price of 10,000 rupee (US$220), the sources noted.
HTC's pricing strategy will bring the HTC Smart to compete head on with the Corby-series handsets from Samsung Electronics, the Cookie handsets from LG Electronics (LGE) as well as the Nokia 5230, the sources indicated.
However, the pricing seems to have begun to pay off as HTC has received orders for the HTC Smart handsets from a number of telecom carriers in Europe, including Telefonica/O2, Telecom Italia, KPN of the Netherlands and Netcom of Norway, the sources said.

Bollywood actor Preity Zinta, who was Thursday appointed as the goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS in India, will create awareness against AIDS along with the members of her Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab.

"All our players will sport red ribbons during their matches. In our first match against Delhi Daredevils, we will take an HIV positive person to the toss to convey our message against stigma and discrimination," Preity said here.

"Me and my team will produce a short commercial to spread awareness against the disease. I will be there, our captain Kumar Sangakkara and other players will also be there," she added.

Besides, Kings XI Punjab will donate 25 percent of the profit they will earn from selling their merchandise to UNAIDS, which will decide its usage for the betterment of HIV positive people.

On being appointed goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS, Preity said: "I have done many roles. This one is different. I am very happy."

"All human beings, wherever we are, have the basic right to be happy and healthy. I see this as a great opportunity to bring the realities faced by people living with HIV to the forefront and to call for attention to the injustices faced by them," she said.

Preity will work to create awareness on HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, with an emphasis on women, children and oppressed classes, the UN body said.

"Goodwill ambassadors are celebrities with a demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of people living with HIV. Highly talented in their own right, they all share an ability to bring issues to global attention, to galvanize support from the public and leading decision makers, and to raise urgently needed support and attention for vital UN programmes," Charles Gilks, country coordinator, UNAIDS, said.

"I am very pleased to appoint Preity Zinta as UNAIDS' special representative," Gilks added.

India is home to at least 2.3 million HIV positive people.

Pentagon shooting suspect killed

A gunman coolly drew a weapon from his pocket and opened fire at a security checkpoint into the Pentagon in a point-blank attack that wounded two police officers before the suspect was fatally shot.

The two officers suffered grazing wounds and were being treated in a hospital after the Thursday (Friday NZ time) shooting, said Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police. The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, of California, died hours after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. They had no motive for the shooting.

The shooter walked up to the checkpoint at the Pentagon's subway entrance in an apparent attempt to get inside the massively fortified Defense Department headquarters. "He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting" no more than five feet away, Keevill said. "He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face." The Pentagon officers returned fire with semiautomatic weapons.

Bedell's death was confirmed on Friday by Beverly Fields, chief of staff of the Washington medical examiner's office; and Leigh Fields, medical legal investigator for the office. Both said Bedell's body had arrived at the medical examiner's office.

The assault at the very threshold of the Pentagon - the US capital's ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001 - came four months after a deadly attack on the Army's Fort Hood, Texas, post allegedly by a US Army psychiatrist with radical Islamic leanings. In the immediate aftermath Thursday, investigators did not think terrorism was involved but were not ruling that out and did not discuss possible motives.

President Barack Obama was closely following the case with updates from the FBI through his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as John Patrick Bedell, 36. They also said they were speaking with a second man, who might have accompanied the shooter, and were running his name through databases.

The subway station is immediately adjacent to the Pentagon building, a five-sided northern Virginia colossus across the Potomac River from Washington. Since a redesign following the 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, riders can no longer disembark directly into the building. Riders take a long escalator ride to the surface from the underground station, then pass through a security check outside the doors of the building, where further security awaits.

After the attack, all Pentagon entrances were secured, then all were reopened except one from the subway, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman. He said the subway entrance was likely to remain closed overnight at least.

Keevill said the gunman gave no clue to the officers at the checkpoint about what he was going to do.

"There was no distress," he said. "When he reached into his pocket, they assumed he was going to get a pass and he came up with a gun."
"He wasn't pretending to be anyone. He was wearing a coat and walke

rt anyone."

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA - The vote of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives on a non-binding resolution in which the 1915 and 1917 Armenian massacres that took place during the Ottoman empire are defined as ''genocide'' was expected in Ankara. So much so that, with unusual speed in Turkey, as soon as it was discovered from the website of the Turkish Cabinet Office that out of the 46 members of the Committee, 23 against 22 voted in favour of the document, a message of condemnation immediately appeared. Premier Tayyip Erdogan expressed concern over the consequences of the vote and underlined that the taking of a stance by the parliamentary body ''risks damaging Turkish-American relations, as well as the process of normalisation between Turkey and Armenia.'' Shortly after, it was announced that the Turkish Ambassador to the US, Namik Tan, has been immediately recalled to Ankara ''for consultation''. Tan arrived in Washington just a few weeks but is already an expert on America. That things were not looking good for Ankara was already clear a few days ago, but events have taken a turn for the worse in the last 48 hours. Turkey was opposed to the approval of the document insomuch as it has always denied that the number of Armenians killed during the massacres total one and a half million (for Ankara there were ''only'' 300,000) and that they died as a result of a civil war and not due to genocide. Thus yesterday morning Turkey had already raised not only the possibility of withdrawing their Ambassador if the resolution were approved, but also the potential of cancelling contracts worth 45 billion dollars with five large US defence companies. Furthermore, Ankara has circulated - via the Turkish press - a so-called 'Plan B' to be implemented if the document is approved. This plan sets out, amongst other things, that Turkey could potentially not ratify the protocols of normalisation of relations signed in October in Zurich with Armenia, considered to be important for the stability of the Caucasus.

At the stroke of midnight, project free-agency-in-an-uncapped-year began. Unrestricted free agents are now required to have six years of experience in the league, which means the number of unrestricted free-agents is more diluted than in years past. Nonetheless, there are still some big names on the unrestricted table.
Which players of this season's 2010 unrestricted free agents are the most valuable? Is it Carolina's Julius Peppers? What about Super Bowl winner, Darren Sharper? It's time for you to rank all of the newest unrestricted free agents in the order you see fit.
