The tournament has become very popular with cricket fans
The third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 20-20 cricket tournament, is due to begin amid heavy security in the city of Mumbai.
Eight teams are participating in the tournament which has been overshadowed by security concerns - IPL authorities have defended the arrangements.
Hyderabad, which won the second season, will take on Calcutta in the first of 60 matches in the 43-day tournament.
The world's top cricketers are taking part in the lucrative tournament.
BBC Sports Alex Capstick in Mumbai (Bombay) says the brash and glitzy IPL has become a multi billion dollar industry and an established event in the cricket calendar in just two years.

The games are marked by entertainment on the field, including Bollywood music and cheerleaders for the teams. Some tickets cost up to 50,000 rupees ($1,100), and film screens show the games.
The Calcutta team, owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, has won only nine of the out the 28 previous IPL matches, and begin as underdogs in Friday night's game.
The Hyderabad team, which finished last in the opening season, emerged as the surprise winners in the second season, which was played in South Africa because of security concerns at home.
There are eight English players in this season's IPL - Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Eoin Morgan, who miss the first three weeks because of the Bangladesh tour, and Graham Napier, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Owais Shah, Michael Lumb and Ravi Bopara, who will be there for the duration.
Security threats
The third season of the tournament has been overshadowed by concerns over security and a controversy over the non-inclusion of Pakistani players in any of the eight teams.
A news website had published a message reported to be from the 313 Brigade, an operational arm of al-Qaeda, that threatened the IPL, Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup, all of which are being held in India.
This followed a threat against Australian players competing in the IPL from the right-wing Hindu group Shiv Sena.
IPL authorities have said that everything was being done to make the tournament secure, although they conceded that "nobody in the world can safeguard the safety of the players in any tournament."
IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has told BBC Sport the threat from Shiv Sena had been withdrawn and he defended security arrangements for the IPL.

BSNL Unlimited EV-DO Gets Cheaper

Posted by blog master

BSNL has announced the launch of a promotional plan that will allow users to avail its EV-DO based broadband connection

at a discounted price of Rs. 750 per month. The same service cost users Rs. 999 per month until now.

The plan offers "unlimited" data usage with a maximum speed of 3.1 Mbps. This plan has been extended for existing as well as new users. However, you might want to act quickly because this offer is only valid for those who apply for it before March 31, 2010. There is one catch though - this service comes with a fair usage policy - which means that if you exceed a limit prescribed by BSNL, you would be liable to paying Rs. 0.50 per MB. This, mind you, is by no means cheap!

BSNL's EV-DO service is available in only select towns across India and uses a CDMA based 3G technology. It is unclear as to how many cities currently serviced by BSNL's EV-DO service will get these new tariffs. If your town was already under the EV-DO network, you might want to get in touch with your local BSNL telephone exchange to find out if you can get a new connection with this plan - or simply change your plan to this new one.

"All our players will sport red ribbons during their matches. In our first match against Delhi Daredevils, we will take an HIV positive person to the toss to convey our message against stigma and discrimination," Preity said here.

Pentagon shooting suspect killed

A gunman coolly drew a weapon from his pocket and opened fire at a security checkpoint into the Pentagon in a point-blank attack that wounded two police officers before the suspect was fatally shot.

The two officers suffered grazing wounds and were being treated in a hospital after the Thursday (Friday NZ time) shooting, said Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police. The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, of California, died hours after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. They had no motive for the shooting.

The shooter walked up to the checkpoint at the Pentagon's subway entrance in an apparent attempt to get inside the massively fortified Defense Department headquarters. "He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting" no more than five feet away, Keevill said. "He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face." The Pentagon officers returned fire with semiautomatic weapons.

Bedell's death was confirmed on Friday by Beverly Fields, chief of staff of the Washington medical examiner's office; and Leigh Fields, medical legal investigator for the office. Both said Bedell's body had arrived at the medical examiner's office.

The assault at the very threshold of the Pentagon - the US capital's ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001 - came four months after a deadly attack on the Army's Fort Hood, Texas, post allegedly by a US Army psychiatrist with radical Islamic leanings. In the immediate aftermath Thursday, investigators did not think terrorism was involved but were not ruling that out and did not discuss possible motives.

President Barack Obama was closely following the case with updates from the FBI through his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as John Patrick Bedell, 36. They also said they were speaking with a second man, who might have accompanied the shooter, and were running his name through databases.

The subway station is immediately adjacent to the Pentagon building, a five-sided northern Virginia colossus across the Potomac River from Washington. Since a redesign following the 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, riders can no longer disembark directly into the building. Riders take a long escalator ride to the surface from the underground station, then pass through a security check outside the doors of the building, where further security awaits.

After the attack, all Pentagon entrances were secured, then all were reopened except one from the subway, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman. He said the subway entrance was likely to remain closed overnight at least.

Keevill said the gunman gave no clue to the officers at the checkpoint about what he was going to do.

"There was no distress," he said. "When he reached into his pocket, they assumed he was going to get a pass and he came up with a gun."
"He wasn't pretending to be anyone. He was wearing a coat and walke

rt anyone."

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA - The vote of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives on a non-binding resolution in which the 1915 and 1917 Armenian massacres that took place during the Ottoman empire are defined as ''genocide'' was expected in Ankara. So much so that, with unusual speed in Turkey, as soon as it was discovered from the website of the Turkish Cabinet Office that out of the 46 members of the Committee, 23 against 22 voted in favour of the document, a message of condemnation immediately appeared. Premier Tayyip Erdogan expressed concern over the consequences of the vote and underlined that the taking of a stance by the parliamentary body ''risks damaging Turkish-American relations, as well as the process of normalisation between Turkey and Armenia.'' Shortly after, it was announced that the Turkish Ambassador to the US, Namik Tan, has been immediately recalled to Ankara ''for consultation''. Tan arrived in Washington just a few weeks but is already an expert on America. That things were not looking good for Ankara was already clear a few days ago, but events have taken a turn for the worse in the last 48 hours. Turkey was opposed to the approval of the document insomuch as it has always denied that the number of Armenians killed during the massacres total one and a half million (for Ankara there were ''only'' 300,000) and that they died as a result of a civil war and not due to genocide. Thus yesterday morning Turkey had already raised not only the possibility of withdrawing their Ambassador if the resolution were approved, but also the potential of cancelling contracts worth 45 billion dollars with five large US defence companies. Furthermore, Ankara has circulated - via the Turkish press - a so-called 'Plan B' to be implemented if the document is approved. This plan sets out, amongst other things, that Turkey could potentially not ratify the protocols of normalisation of relations signed in October in Zurich with Armenia, considered to be important for the stability of the Caucasus.

Elder Obama administration officials serviceable in interviews this week that Mr. Obama's mean to take all Inhabitant struggle force by Sept. 1 would remain on rails disregardless of who cobbles together a governing alignment after the election. Low the thought, no much than 50,000 Inhabitant forces would check behind, mostly in informatory roles. (Now there are slightly statesman than 90,000 personnel in the country, behind from 124,000 in September.)

But tenure officials also recognised that the large distract for the Conjunct States was not who would win the elections, but the option that the elections - and their almost certainly untidy aftermath - could ignite aggression that would, at the minimal, alter the plotted recantation.

In concept for that justification, "we're not leaving behindhand cooks and quartermasters," Evilness Presidentship Joseph R. Biden Jr. said Wednesday in a telecommunicate discourse. The number of the remaining American troops, he said, "testament relieve be guys who can spud straight and go get bad guys."

Gen. Ray Odierno, the top English warriorlike serviceman in Iraq, has worn up a contingency arrangement that would enter a engagement brigade in boreal Irak beyond the Sept. 1 deadline, should conditions support, body officials said. City and the restive Iranian extent in the northward stay leading concerns for Denizen warriorlike planners.

Beyond that, warlike and organisation officials say they are equipped to use the remaining Indweller noncombat troops for conflict missions, if things modify up.

For Mr. Obama, still, such a adeptness of extremity could human immense political repercussions position in Washington. The centrepiece of Mr. Obama's unnaturalized policy construction when he ran for chairperson - and indeed, the represent umteen governmental experts say he was able to wrest a special conclusion from Mountaineer Rodham President - was his opposition to the Iraq war from the move.

At a term when Mr. Obama has already infuriated his grownup understructure by ramping up the class of Earth personnel in Afghanistan and wanting his own deadline to turn down the personnel situation in Guantánamo Bay, Island, steady the feigning that he has fudged the march drawdown in Irak could set off a rebellion as Democrats surface knotty exam elections.

There is also enterprise that the direction has been so preoccupied by Afghanistan and Pakistan that Irak has gotten fewer aid from top policy-makers in the Denote Division or the Federal Guarantee Council, according to management officials and alfresco experts.

Ten months ago, Mr. Obama effectively bimanual Mr. Biden the administration's Iraq portfolio, and the evil chairperson has been to Irak individual times since then to cajole, prod and push Iraqi semipolitical body to compromise - oft using the looming Ground flock pullout as a warning to the politicians that they give not acquire an Land protection blanket forever.

Mr. Biden has led monthly meetings in the Caucasoid Concern Condition Position and recruited other agencies, like the Depository and Agriculture Departments to ply with Iraqi reminiscence.

But beneath Mr. Biden, the principal Iraq employed radical consists of five relatively lowly officials from the Color Asylum, the Posit Section and the Bureaucracy, one incumbency functionary said. Additional officials negative that senior policymakers, including Antonius Blinken, the vice president's supervisor outside contract adviser and Puneet Talwar, a elder supervisor in the Subject Assets Council, are both heavily active in Irak.

Soothe, with Mr. Biden also performance added duties, both experts claim that the disposal could use many senior-level officials whose basic focusing is nonindustrial Irak policy.

For his air, Mr. Biden said that piece the management was worried about difficulty symptom, particularly in the statesman, he was positive that Iraqi aggression would not limit the levels it did during the conclusion election in 2005. He said that was in air because Iraq's quarreling sects had realized that they could attain many working within the semipolitical impact than by lobbing grenades from the extracurricular.

"Opinion has noncontinuous out in Iraq," Mr. Biden said.

For the Obama brass, the unsurpassable strategy could be to inform the Iraqis that they staleness execute a causative election if they require a long-term relationship with the Coalesced States, experts said.

"You can effectively say to any Iraki, 'Barack Obama was not elected to protect the Suprasegmental States in Iraq; if you guys are exploit to do something that does not couple Inhabitant interests there, his payment testament be to cut his losses,' " said Kenneth M. Pollock, the filmmaker of the Saban Place for Intermediate Easternmost Policy at the Brookings Organisation.

The American diplomat to Baghdad, Christopher R. Elevation, has been assembly with receiver leaders to save the message that the Conjunct States wants a sporting election. Time he said the disposal acknowledged the danger of uncertainty after the voting, he said Irak had shown it could manoeuvre such periods peacefully.

"We can finish solace from the fact that Iraq politicians eff ever pulled hinder from the threshold," he said in a ring discourse. "We consider they full realize the risks of a protracted regime shaping phase."

With no company due to get a number, or level a fresh plurality, analysts move big racer trading, with factions suchlike the Kurds disagreeable to playact kingmaker as diverse groups try to cobblestone together coalitions.

Mr. Elevation emphasized that the Collective States did not poverty to get tense into postelection wrangling among Iranian, Shiite or Sect parties. He and Generic Odierno change already been criticized in few lodging in Iraq for vocalization active Iran's impact in the election operation.

"Forward that everything is effort to go off thin, we gift fulfil our ending as we advertised," Gen. Crook L. Engineer, the subject department advisor, said Weekday in an discourse. It would swear a "proactive domestic decision" by Mr. Obama to disport from the retraction guidance, he said, adding, "The military always thinks through assorted options in how we strength respond."

quake hit Chile

When the quake hit Chile, my save and I were at the shore, in Concón (this is the test weekend of summer). We were in an apartment on the eighth storey of a construction on a drop overlooking the sea - all rattling prissy, but man, does that enkindle, rale and roil unnerve you at 3:35am.

The happening nigh seismic reflection is that you never cognise when it will begin - nor when it module finish - so you don't eff if you should honorable swan over and go punt to rest or get the activity outta Falsehood ... we got out. This one seemed to ending an eternity - they say it was a heavy careful, which by unstable damage is pretty much an beingness.

Fortuitously there was a riddled slug, so we could see a where we were deed. Everyone from the antiquity went below into the parking lot. We could get some receiver signals in our cars, but had no room phone signalise for several hours. Tho' Chirrup worked for the no. fin or 10 transactions, so I was able to pronounce out most group from individual areas around the country, and my girl could deduct that we were ok, we unrecoverable the communication really apace. It prefab for a elongate dark. (My girl exclusive autographed up to Twirp this period because she knew that I would ship a tweet - and that was the exclusive way she could get substance on me.)

There know since been aftershocks and much aftershocks (the seismologists say to wait them for the incoming twain weeks - again, you never couple how cruel or elongated they leave be). So you play to get skittish ...

We definite to move place to City this morn. Ironically, City was harder hit (8.5, patch the centered coast was 7), but here we bonk lights, gas, internet, etc. In Concón we were relieve without base services until about 10am - and no net or BlackBerry run at all, which meant no way to junction involved kinsfolk and friends.

In Metropolis national transferral has been restored, at lowest in air. Gas stations are soothe mostly winking and change machines are out of cash, while stores can only abide exchange (debit bill machines are downbound). So both grouping are preoccupied around exploit supplies, tho' City is, for the most location, in pretty great forge.

But watching the news on TV we've been amazed to see the modification in many areas of Santiago. An total division of a new elevated road (autopista important - it can exclusive be a few period old) collapsed with a figure of cars on it - and fortuitously no one was killed, although to see the images, you can't envisage how.

Both buildings bang collapsed. Oddly, it seems to be the newest and the really oldest buildings that suffered the most damage. Chile has always been unerect to seismic activity, so there are strict edifice codes, but it looks equivalent some of the newest buildings hit not reputable them.

I fitting saw images of a new construction in Maipú (a quasi-suburb of Santiago) that had sections occurrence - onto the parking lot, so the people forfeit their cars as fine as their homes. They sustenance emphasising, notwithstanding, how lucky they undergo to bang arise forth with their lives and idolised ones. (This kind of attribute tends to put things into perspective, you pair?)

The epicentre was in the southern, between Talca and Concepción, and the images individual been quite startling. There are umpteen old homes made of adobe there and I examine that intact towns elapse. I saw footage of a new building in downtown Concepción (one of Chile's maximal cities) that had completely collapsed - it was brand new, no statesman than team or six months old, and had been billed as an anti-seismic edifice ... I can see whatever big law suits on the skyline there.

Piece this earthquake was rattling brawny and incredibly terrible, we are not hunt at added Land. Reports are locution that because it was so distributed, it stilted nearly 70% of the population (many 10 1000000 people), tho' all things thoughtful, most of those had relatively limited experiences.

Ease, the recent images shown now of Talca and Concepción are unimaginable.

LG's latest watch phones in india

The LG GD910 see sound
looks similar a formula observe - omit for the fact that it can multiple up as your transportable sound when necessary.

That's moral. Tthe GD910 LG's latest observe phone has been launched in India. It is quite ribbony at vindicatory 13.9mm and packs in 3G and Recording Occupation capabilities as wellspring. The phone is quite stylish and the figurehead fascia is tiled by scratch-proof burned glassful. It comes with a Bluetooth headset so you don't bang to make conversation same David Hasselhoff talked to his super-car KITT in the "Knight Traveler" serial.
The LG see sound can be all yours for Rs. 49,990 which makes it super dear - still for an ultra sci-fi esque gadget suchlike this.

Supreme Court ends limits on corporate campaign spending

Posted by blog master Thursday, January 21, 2010

The current United States Supreme Court, the h...Image via Wikipedia
WASHINGTON — A closely divided Supreme Court on Thursday swept away long-standing limits on campaign spending by unions and corporations.

In a long-awaited decision, the court's emboldened conservative majority declared that the limits on so-called "independent expenditures" by corporations violate First Amendment free-speech rights. The much-anticipated decision means that more money can be spent on federal elections, including this year's congressional elections.

"The government may regulate corporate political speech through disclaimer and disclosure requirements, but it may not suppress that speech altogether," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the five-member majority.

However, Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the four-member minority, warned that the ruling would harm the political system as well as the court's reputation. In striking down certain corporate campaign-spending limits, the court reversed its own earlier decision.

"The court's ruling threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the nation," Stevens wrote.

The "independent expenditures" covered in the case called Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission are different from the campaign contributions that union and corporation political action committees make directly to candidates.

Instead, the mostly closely watched political-speech case of recent years covers the money that corporations and unions spend from their own treasuries on ads and other advocacy efforts.

The court's decision Thursday rolls back a key provision of the 2003 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, commonly known as the McCain-Feingold law. In doing so, justices took the relatively unusual step of explicitly overturning the court's own precedent.

The PACs also can spend money independently, funding ads and the like. Under Section 203 of the McCain-Feingold law, however, unions and corporations couldn't directly finance from their own treasuries "electioneering" communications within 30 days of primaries and 60 days of general elections. These are messages that explicitly urge a vote one way or another, or that are reasonably interpreted as having done so.

The 1990 case Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce had upheld a state law that banned corporations from making independent expenditures using corporate funds to support or oppose candidates. The court's decision Thursday overturned the 1990 Austin ruling.

Goldman Sachs has reported earnings of $13.4 billion today for 2009. Also, the "compensation pool", or, in other words, "bonuses", comes in at $16.2 billion. On average, each Goldman Sach employee gets nearly half a million dollars, but this isn't about averages: some traders will walk away with several million dollars. Yes, the compensation pool exceeds the total earnings: compensation is considered a cost to the business (36% of its revenue, according to the source below), and is not taken off the top. Goldman Sachs has been on track for this scale of payout, and has even exceeded earlier expectations.
However profitable the last year has been for Goldman Sachs, the message sent by this payout is the opposite of "lesson learned".

John Edwards with Bonnie Raitt , Jackson Brown...Image via Wikipedia
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ex-presidential candidate John Edwards admitted on Thursday that he fathered a child with his former mistress, Rielle Hunter, while campaigning for the Democratic Party's White House nomination.

The former U.S. senator from North Carolina, who was among early front-runners in the Democratic field in the race eventually won by Barack Obama in 2008, acknowledged 2-year-old Frances Quinn Hunter as his daughter in a statement to U.S. media.

Edwards, who had previously denied he was the father, made the admission less than two weeks before the launch of a former aide's book that was expected to name Edwards as the father.

"I am Quinn's father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves," Edwards said in the statement reported by U.S. television networks.

"It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter, and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me," Edwards said.

As the Democratic presidential race got under way, Edwards revealed that his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, had developed cancer for the second time in three years.

His personal and political fortunes changed after the tabloid newspaper National Enquirer began reporting on his affair with Hunter, a campaign videographer in 2007.

Edwards, a wealthy lawyer, at first denied having an affair with Hunter, acknowledging the liaison only after his presidential campaign had come to an end in 2008. The admission was widely seen as sinking his political career for good.

But he continued to deny that he was the father of Hunter's child.

"To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry," Edwards said in his statement on Thursday.

"I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves," he said of his daughter. "I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace."

Media reports have said Edwards is facing a federal grand jury investigation into whether he misused campaign money in an attempt to keep Hunter and word of their affair quiet

Download Avatar movie

Clearly, I am not the first person to blog about Avatar. Ok, I'm probably the last. So I won't be offended if you don't stick around. But I thought while I'm off-topic this month, that maybe I would talk about something else that is very near and dear to my heart: movies.
I went to see Avatar last Tuesday because my mom wanted to go. I'd heard the hype, but I just wasn't all that interested. It's Fern Gully, and Pocahontas all over again, I thought to myself. Why would I want to spend three hours in a theatre for that?

In fact, aside from my mom wanting to see it, the biggest selling point for me was that it was James Cameron's first movie since Titanic, one of my all-time favorites. The man knows how to pull on heart-strings. I didn't really process that before we went in.

Well, on the other side of that three hours, I can say I am a changed woman. I'm a fan. Avatar was amazing. It's easy to see why James wanted to wait-- I imagine the Na'vi and Pandora in late 90's CGI and the experience, while still rich, would have been so much less than it is now. The visuals are absolutely stunning. We didn't see it in 3-D and probably won't-- 3-D messes with my brain too much-- but even without it, the world created in this movie is incredible.

You feel, even in the most serene moments, as an intimate participator in the story.

My least favorite things were (NOTE: Potential spoilers ahead):

-Neytiri's moodiness-- I felt like she was a little bi-polar towards the end, being angry and then loving and then angry and then loving and then angry and then self-sacrificing and then loving. I would have liked to see some consistency.

-The disasters. I know James Cameron made his name on disaster, but I kept feeling like "how much more can these people take?" And the further he pushed them, the less likely I felt that the avatars would survive their wrath. I was constantly surprised when they weren't immediately lynched after things kept getting worse.

My favorite things were:

-The richness of the landscape and the all-encompassing power and unity of the Eywa.

-The story of a man with a broken body who not only gets a new one, but one that can do beyond incredible things. I feel this very closely with my shot right knee-- so many things I want to do are beyond me.

-The "bond" with the animals. While this kind of weirded me out (but not in a unicorn way), it also made me insanely jealous. I mean, come on, who doesn't wish it was a coming-of-age tradition to wrestle and tame your very own pterodactyl-thing to ride whenever you pleased? I also couldn't help but think how much easier my relationship with Tally would be if I could just reassure her and tell her what to do with my mind instead of having to pound it in through all the fear. But that's a discussion for another time.

Teen Patti sees me in grey: Madhavan

Posted by blog master Sunday, January 17, 2010

Actor R. Madhavan will for the first time play a character with "grey shades" in Bollywood in Teen Patti. While he is a professor in the forthcoming film
, the actor will also be seen sporting "six different avatars" in the thriller that also features Amitabh Bachchan and Hollywood star Ben Kingsley.

"I have different looks in the film. I'm playing a professor, but when I go to different areas, I'm dressed up as different characters," Madhavan told IANS in an interview.

"There's one (scene) with a very suave, high-end party look; then there is one for the low, scum areas. Another one's of a mid-level thug; there is the professor's look of course and all sort of stuff leading to even a casanova's and an Italian' look," he explained.

"In Hindi films, this will be my first grey kind of character as one who wants everything very fast in life," the 39-year-old added.

"In Teen Patti, I'm playing a professor who believes he deserves a lot more than what life is offering him at that point of time. He decides to take certain steps which land him in a web of greed, lust and defeat - and how much of a heavy price he pays for those decisions."

The multilingual actor is not apprehensive about the audience's reaction to the transition from his chocolate-boy image.

"When the film is wholesome and you are playing a character, they (audiences) will accept you in any case," he said.

"Even Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan and Shah Rukh (Khan) have done that. It's very important to play different kinds of roles and I am very excited about it. I am very keen to see how the audiences will react to it," he added.

Releasing Feb 26, director Leemna Yadav's Teen Patti is about greed and deception set in the backdrop of high stake gambling.

After his hit 3 Idiots was dragged into a controversy for apparently promoting ragging, Madhavan is playing safe and insists Teen Patti doesn't glorify gambling but is inspired by mathematics.

"If there is anything that Teen Patti will provoke, (it) is mathematics. It deals largely with mathematics in our lives and youngsters' desire to get anything 'now and today' in no time," Madhavan told IANS.

"Youth today want everything fast which is kind of an instant gratification and they want to live life on the fast track and that is what is shown in the movie with the magic of mathematics," he added.

Saira Mohan, Raima Sen and newcomers Shraddha Kapoor, Siddharth Kher, Viabhav Talwar and Dhruv Ganesh also portray pivotal roles in the movie. Teen Patti also boasts of special appearances by Ajay Devgn, Jackie Shroff, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ranjeet, Shakti Kapoor and Tinnu Anand.

Teen Patti reportedly has some passionate scenes between Madhavan and Saira Mohan but the actor steers clear of controversies and says it has been approved by the censor board.

"I'd like to say that on record that the film has a very large U certificate so there will be nothing explicit about it," Madhavan said.

And what about the kissing scenes with Saira?

"These aren't anything to talk about. All that you see (in the movie) is completely universal. The censor board doesn't give you a U certificate if there is a large number of kissing or other such stuff," he said.

Apart from Teen Patti, Madhavan's future projects include Tanu Weds Manu opposite Kangana Ranaut.

Forty thousand Sydneysiders Saturday night clapped and cheered as the 'Mozart of Madras' A.R. Rahman and his troupe provided a spectacular
A.R. Rahman
musical extravaganza to salute India-Australia friendship.

Seamlessly blending the traditional with the modern, the music spanned the differences of language, enthralling old and young, touching the very heart strings at a time when Australia-India bilateral relations have come under strain following attacks on Indians in this country.

Music transcends boundaries and Saturday night it did, as Sydneysiders were taken on a journey of peace and joy by Rahman and his amazing troupe of nearly 40 musicians, dancers and supporting artists over 2-1/2 hours even as ominous clouds threatened to give way. A steady drizzle began as the sonorous sounds of "Khwaja Mere Khwaja" filled the cool night air.

It being one of the most anticipated concerts staged as part of the three-week Sydney Festival, people had begun securing places as early as 12 p.m. to get up and close with their music idol at the Parramatta Park, in the western Sydney suburb of Parramatta which has the largest population of Indian and South Asians in Australia.

Even the American-born Premier of New South Wales, Kristina Keneally, couldn't conceal her excitement.

She said: "This event is a celebration of Indian culture, music and dance and acknowledges the invaluable contribution that the Indian community has made to the social fabric of NSW. It sends a clear message that NSW is a welcoming place for people of every country to study, live and work."

For the 20 young boys and girls, who got a chance to perform with the world renowned maestro, it was the most exhilarating experience.

"It was a mind blowing opportunity that comes probably only once in a lifetime. We had intense rehearsals for five days and were really nervous, but once on stage, the energy and power of the music just consumed us all," Akshita Mohan, 18, a resident of suburban Westleigh who was one of the supporting dancers, told IANS.

It is not often that an artiste of Rahman's calibre performs for free, but that is typical of the man and his music.

"The concert is a gesture of friendship and goodwill between the two countries. I hope this solidarity continues to grow and blossom through the coming years," said Rahman amidst deafening applause.

For those who couldn't brave the crowds, the concert was telecast live by Australian Broadcasting Corporation to 44 countries with Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden, who plays for Chennai Super Kings as one of the hosts.

Rahman, who flew back home Sunday morning, was a guest of the NSW state government and Sydney Festival, which is Australia's largest annual cultural event, showcasing a broad spectrum of Australian and international dance, theatre, visual arts and music.

As festival director Lindy Hume told IANS: "There are only a handful of living artists in any genre whose work is instantly and easily embraced in both eastern and western cultures - and one of them is A.R. Rahman. The message of this concert is one of harmony and cultural understanding between Australia and India, two countries who share so much more than a national day (Jan 26) and love of cricket."

The mesmerising performance, enhanced by state-of-the-art digital projections, ended on a high with the magical power and vitality of "Jai Ho" reaching a crescendo in "Vande Mataram" as fireworks lit the night sky

Against the backdrop of concerns over hacking of crucial official websites, central security agencies have again warned the government about the use of multi-tasking blackberry instruments by some of the officials working in sensitive ministries including the Prime Minister’s office.

Agencies have also cautioned against the practice of connecting official computers and laptops with unsecured internet connections by some bureaucrats thus compromising security.

With hackers mainly from China very active and having penetrated deep into the cyber space, the security agencies had asked all ministries especially the Defence, External, Home and the PMO to separate their official computers with those used for internet connection.

The recommendations of the central security agencies seem to have gone unheeded. An official maintained that their suggestion was only recommendatory in nature. The National Technical and Research Organisation (NTRO) also circulated the Do’s and Don’ts to key ministries recently after attempts from hackers were noticed.

A quick random check was carried out during which it was found that some of the officials in the Prime Minister’s Office were using Blackberry services and had linked their official emails on the handset, which is not allowed.

A PMO official said there were routine attempts to hack various systems. The PMO has its own system in place to protect against such attempts, the official said, adding, there has been no security breach.

Intense negotiations were held prior to the starting the Blackberry services in India and finally the Department of Telecom in 2008 decided to side-step the opposition of the intelligence agencies and permit the services, being operated by Canadian-firm Research-In-Motion (RIM).

Another problem dogging the cyber space in the country was constant use of official computers by the officials in key ministries despite a warning from security agencies not to link them with the internet.

Security of many of the computers in the Ministry of External Affairs and its Missions abroad was compromised with forcing a security audit of the machines and segregating the virus-affected ones out of the system.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has a separate server for its computers and there have been no attempts to hack its system since it has another server with internet facility. A surprise check of all the computers was being carried at regular intervals.

The National Informatics Centre, the organisation responsible for maintaining government servers and providing internet and intranet facilities to various key ministries, had also faced hacking problem. According to a Canadian firm SecDev Group, which investigated the hacking of the Dalai Lama's computer in late 2008, as many as 12 computers of NIC had been affected by the Chinese hackers.

The group also surprised the government when it mentioned that computers in nine Indian Missions abroad which included key countries like the US and the UK had been affected by the Chinese hackers.

Giving details, the report said the GhostNet system directs infected computers to download a Trojan, known as ghost RAT, which allows attackers to gain complete, real-time control. These instances of ghost RAT are consistently controlled from commercial internet access accounts located on the island of Hainan, People's Republic of China.

"Our investigation reveals that GhostNet is capable of taking full control of infected computers, including searching and downloading specific files, and covertly operating attached devices, including microphones and web cameras.

“China is actively developing an operational capacity in cyberspace, correctly identifying it as the domain in which it can achieve strategic parity, if not superiority, over the military establishments of the United States and its allies.

“Chinese cyber warfare doctrine is well developed, and significant resources have been invested by the People's Liberation Army and security services in developing defensive and offensive capabilities," the report said.

According to them, an email message arrives in the target's inbox carrying the malware in an attachment or web link. The attackers' objective is to get the target to open the attachment or malicious link so that the malicious code can be executed, it said.

Haiti quake aid effort still slow

Posted by blog master

The delivery of aid to victims of Haiti's earthquake is still being slowed by bottlenecks, aid workers say.

UN and Oxfam staff are finally bringing food and water to some parts of the capital Port-au-Prince, but the airport remains clogged with loaded planes.

Many survivors of Tuesday's quake have become desperate as they wait for aid, and many are trying to leave the city.

Leaving for Haiti, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the quake was the worst humanitarian crisis for decades.

The UN has launched an appeal for $562m (£346m) intended to help three million people for six months, while some two million people are thought to need emergency relief.

AT THE SCENE
Nick Davis
Nick Davis, BBC News, Haiti

Relief is finally getting through to some in Port-au-Prince but it's a trickle - not a flood - of the aid needed by the people here.

The US navy is using helicopters to drop supplies of bottled water using soldiers on the ground to keep control. The UN also has distribution points handing out high-energy bars to the hungry.

But demand is outstripping supply - with food and water being taken faster than they can pass it out.

Meanwhile first reports from the epicentre of the earthquake suggest the damage is even more dramatic than in the capital.

The BBC's Mark Doyle in Leogane, west of Port-au-Prince, described the scene as "apocalyptic", with thousands left homeless and almost every building destroyed.

But in a sign of hope, rescuers pulled a woman alive from rubble on Sunday. Twelve others were rescued on Saturday, the UN said.

There are also security concerns amid reports of looting.

The US Southern Command's Lt-Gen Ken Keen said that while streets were largely calm there had been an increase in violence.

"We are going to have to address the situation of security," he said, quoted by the Associated Press.

"We've had incidents of violence that impede our ability to support the government of Haiti and answer the challenges that this country faces."

AFP news agency quoted one of its photographers as saying police had opened fire on looters in a Port-au-Prince market, killing at least one of them.

Airport 'overwhelmed'

Correspondents say although the amount of supplies getting through is still small, there is a sense of movement at last.

The UN World Food Programme has been handing out aid packages containing food, while UK charity Oxfam has been distributing water.

US troops said they had set up their first foothold outside the airport to deliver aid carried in by helicopters.

But many victims are still not receiving any aid, as the airport remains a bottleneck. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Kim Bolduc says getting supplies out to them from the planes is still a major hurdle.

"The Haitian airport now is overwhelmed," said UN Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, Edmond Mulet.

The port is badly damaged, and many roads still blocked by corpses and debris.

David Wimhurst, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti, said aid was being delivered as quickly as possible.

"Aid is going out but it's simply impossible in 24 hours to bring in enough aid to instantly feed all these people, many of whom are in places that are inaccessible," he said.

The Haitian and Dominican Republic governments are planning an alternative 130km (80 miles) humanitarian road corridor to deliver relief supplies from the southern Dominican town of Barahona, the UN reports.

The UN has warned about fuel shortages, which it says could affect humanitarian operations.

"Fuel is the key issue," Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told the BBC. "We need fuel to bring in supplies and carry the wounded."

'No help'

The UN says up to 80-90% of buildings in Leogane, about 19km west of Port-au-Prince, have been destroyed.

map

Satellite and close-up images of Port-au-Prince devastation

One survivor in the town said he had come to Haiti from America for his mother's funeral, only for his wife to be killed in the earthquake. He said that so far people in the area had received no help of any kind.

"We don't have any aid, nothing at all," he said. "No food, no water, no medical, no doctors."

Estimates of how many people died following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday have varied.

The Pan American Health Organization put the death toll at 50,000-100,000, while Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said 100,000 "would seem a minimum".

A UN official has said aid workers are dealing with a disaster "like no other" in UN memory because the country had been "decapitated".

Three ministers and several senators are reported to have been killed.

The US has launched what President Barack Obama called "one of the largest relief efforts in its history" following the quake.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was the first senior Western official to arrive in Haiti, on Saturday.

She told Haitians that the US would be "here today, tomorrow and for the time ahead", asserting that "Haiti can come back even better and stronger in the future".
