WASHINGTON — A closely divided Supreme Court on Thursday swept away long-standing limits on campaign spending by unions and corporations.
In a long-awaited decision, the court's emboldened conservative majority declared that the limits on so-called "independent expenditures" by corporations violate First Amendment free-speech rights. The much-anticipated decision means that more money can be spent on federal elections, including this year's congressional elections.
"The government may regulate corporate political speech through disclaimer and disclosure requirements, but it may not suppress that speech altogether," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the five-member majority.
However, Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the four-member minority, warned that the ruling would harm the political system as well as the court's reputation. In striking down certain corporate campaign-spending limits, the court reversed its own earlier decision.
"The court's ruling threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the nation," Stevens wrote.
Instead, the mostly closely watched political-speech case of recent years covers the money that corporations and unions spend from their own treasuries on ads and other advocacy efforts.
The court's decision Thursday rolls back a key provision of the 2003 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, commonly known as the McCain-Feingold law. In doing so, justices took the relatively unusual step of explicitly overturning the court's own precedent.
The PACs also can spend money independently, funding ads and the like. Under Section 203 of the McCain-Feingold law, however, unions and corporations couldn't directly finance from their own treasuries "electioneering" communications within 30 days of primaries and 60 days of general elections. These are messages that explicitly urge a vote one way or another, or that are reasonably interpreted as having done so.
The 1990 case Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce had upheld a state law that banned corporations from making independent expenditures using corporate funds to support or oppose candidates. The court's decision Thursday overturned the 1990 Austin ruling.

Goldman Sachs has reported earnings of $13.4 billion today for 2009. Also, the "compensation pool", or, in other words, "bonuses", comes in at $16.2 billion. On average, each Goldman Sach employee gets nearly half a million dollars, but this isn't about averages: some traders will walk away with several million dollars. Yes, the compensation pool exceeds the total earnings: compensation is considered a cost to the business (36% of its revenue, according to the source below), and is not taken off the top. Goldman Sachs has been on track for this scale of payout, and has even exceeded earlier expectations.
However profitable the last year has been for Goldman Sachs, the message sent by this payout is the opposite of "lesson learned".

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ex-presidential candidate John Edwards admitted on Thursday that he fathered a child with his former mistress, Rielle Hunter, while campaigning for the Democratic Party's White House nomination.
The former U.S. senator from North Carolina, who was among early front-runners in the Democratic field in the race eventually won by Barack Obama in 2008, acknowledged 2-year-old Frances Quinn Hunter as his daughter in a statement to U.S. media.
Edwards, who had previously denied he was the father, made the admission less than two weeks before the launch of a former aide's book that was expected to name Edwards as the father.
"I am Quinn's father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves," Edwards said in the statement reported by U.S. television networks.
"It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter, and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me," Edwards said.
As the Democratic presidential race got under way, Edwards revealed that his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, had developed cancer for the second time in three years.
His personal and political fortunes changed after the tabloid newspaper National Enquirer began reporting on his affair with Hunter, a campaign videographer in 2007.
Edwards, a wealthy lawyer, at first denied having an affair with Hunter, acknowledging the liaison only after his presidential campaign had come to an end in 2008. The admission was widely seen as sinking his political career for good.
But he continued to deny that he was the father of Hunter's child.
"To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry," Edwards said in his statement on Thursday.
"I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves," he said of his daughter. "I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace."
Media reports have said Edwards is facing a federal grand jury investigation into whether he misused campaign money in an attempt to keep Hunter and word of their affair quiet

Clearly, I am not the first person to blog about Avatar. Ok, I'm probably the last. So I won't be offended if you don't stick around. But I thought while I'm off-topic this month, that maybe I would talk about something else that is very near and dear to my heart: movies.
I went to see Avatar last Tuesday because my mom wanted to go. I'd heard the hype, but I just wasn't all that interested. It's Fern Gully, and Pocahontas all over again, I thought to myself. Why would I want to spend three hours in a theatre for that?
In fact, aside from my mom wanting to see it, the biggest selling point for me was that it was James Cameron's first movie since Titanic, one of my all-time favorites. The man knows how to pull on heart-strings. I didn't really process that before we went in.
Well, on the other side of that three hours, I can say I am a changed woman. I'm a fan. Avatar was amazing. It's easy to see why James wanted to wait-- I imagine the Na'vi and Pandora in late 90's CGI and the experience, while still rich, would have been so much less than it is now. The visuals are absolutely stunning. We didn't see it in 3-D and probably won't-- 3-D messes with my brain too much-- but even without it, the world created in this movie is incredible.
You feel, even in the most serene moments, as an intimate participator in the story.
My least favorite things were (NOTE: Potential spoilers ahead):
-Neytiri's moodiness-- I felt like she was a little bi-polar towards the end, being angry and then loving and then angry and then loving and then angry and then self-sacrificing and then loving. I would have liked to see some consistency.
-The disasters. I know James Cameron made his name on disaster, but I kept feeling like "how much more can these people take?" And the further he pushed them, the less likely I felt that the avatars would survive their wrath. I was constantly surprised when they weren't immediately lynched after things kept getting worse.
My favorite things were:
-The richness of the landscape and the all-encompassing power and unity of the Eywa.
-The story of a man with a broken body who not only gets a new one, but one that can do beyond incredible things. I feel this very closely with my shot right knee-- so many things I want to do are beyond me.
-The "bond" with the animals. While this kind of weirded me out (but not in a unicorn way), it also made me insanely jealous. I mean, come on, who doesn't wish it was a coming-of-age tradition to wrestle and tame your very own pterodactyl-thing to ride whenever you pleased? I also couldn't help but think how much easier my relationship with Tally would be if I could just reassure her and tell her what to do with my mind instead of having to pound it in through all the fear. But that's a discussion for another time. Download Avatar movie
Actor R. Madhavan will for the first time play a character with "grey shades" in Bollywood in Teen Patti. While he is a professor in the forthcoming film
, the actor will also be seen sporting "six different avatars" in the thriller that also features Amitabh Bachchan and Hollywood star Ben Kingsley.
"I have different looks in the film. I'm playing a professor, but when I go to different areas, I'm dressed up as different characters," Madhavan told IANS in an interview.
"There's one (scene) with a very suave, high-end party look; then there is one for the low, scum areas. Another one's of a mid-level thug; there is the professor's look of course and all sort of stuff leading to even a casanova's and an Italian' look," he explained.
"In Hindi films, this will be my first grey kind of character as one who wants everything very fast in life," the 39-year-old added.
"In Teen Patti, I'm playing a professor who believes he deserves a lot more than what life is offering him at that point of time. He decides to take certain steps which land him in a web of greed, lust and defeat - and how much of a heavy price he pays for those decisions."
The multilingual actor is not apprehensive about the audience's reaction to the transition from his chocolate-boy image.
"When the film is wholesome and you are playing a character, they (audiences) will accept you in any case," he said.
"Even Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan and Shah Rukh (Khan) have done that. It's very important to play different kinds of roles and I am very excited about it. I am very keen to see how the audiences will react to it," he added.
Releasing Feb 26, director Leemna Yadav's Teen Patti is about greed and deception set in the backdrop of high stake gambling.
After his hit 3 Idiots was dragged into a controversy for apparently promoting ragging, Madhavan is playing safe and insists Teen Patti doesn't glorify gambling but is inspired by mathematics.
"If there is anything that Teen Patti will provoke, (it) is mathematics. It deals largely with mathematics in our lives and youngsters' desire to get anything 'now and today' in no time," Madhavan told IANS.
"Youth today want everything fast which is kind of an instant gratification and they want to live life on the fast track and that is what is shown in the movie with the magic of mathematics," he added.
Saira Mohan, Raima Sen and newcomers Shraddha Kapoor, Siddharth Kher, Viabhav Talwar and Dhruv Ganesh also portray pivotal roles in the movie. Teen Patti also boasts of special appearances by Ajay Devgn, Jackie Shroff, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ranjeet, Shakti Kapoor and Tinnu Anand.
Teen Patti reportedly has some passionate scenes between Madhavan and Saira Mohan but the actor steers clear of controversies and says it has been approved by the censor board.
"I'd like to say that on record that the film has a very large U certificate so there will be nothing explicit about it," Madhavan said.
And what about the kissing scenes with Saira?
"These aren't anything to talk about. All that you see (in the movie) is completely universal. The censor board doesn't give you a U certificate if there is a large number of kissing or other such stuff," he said.
Forty thousand Sydneysiders Saturday night clapped and cheered as the 'Mozart of Madras' A.R. Rahman and his troupe provided a spectacular
A.R. Rahman
musical extravaganza to salute India-Australia friendship.
Seamlessly blending the traditional with the modern, the music spanned the differences of language, enthralling old and young, touching the very heart strings at a time when Australia-India bilateral relations have come under strain following attacks on Indians in this country.
Music transcends boundaries and Saturday night it did, as Sydneysiders were taken on a journey of peace and joy by Rahman and his amazing troupe of nearly 40 musicians, dancers and supporting artists over 2-1/2 hours even as ominous clouds threatened to give way. A steady drizzle began as the sonorous sounds of "Khwaja Mere Khwaja" filled the cool night air.
It being one of the most anticipated concerts staged as part of the three-week Sydney Festival, people had begun securing places as early as 12 p.m. to get up and close with their music idol at the Parramatta Park, in the western Sydney suburb of Parramatta which has the largest population of Indian and South Asians in Australia.
She said: "This event is a celebration of Indian culture, music and dance and acknowledges the invaluable contribution that the Indian community has made to the social fabric of NSW. It sends a clear message that NSW is a welcoming place for people of every country to study, live and work."
For the 20 young boys and girls, who got a chance to perform with the world renowned maestro, it was the most exhilarating experience.
"It was a mind blowing opportunity that comes probably only once in a lifetime. We had intense rehearsals for five days and were really nervous, but once on stage, the energy and power of the music just consumed us all," Akshita Mohan, 18, a resident of suburban Westleigh who was one of the supporting dancers, told IANS.
It is not often that an artiste of Rahman's calibre performs for free, but that is typical of the man and his music.
"The concert is a gesture of friendship and goodwill between the two countries. I hope this solidarity continues to grow and blossom through the coming years," said Rahman amidst deafening applause.
For those who couldn't brave the crowds, the concert was telecast live by Australian Broadcasting Corporation to 44 countries with Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden, who plays for Chennai Super Kings as one of the hosts.
Rahman, who flew back home Sunday morning, was a guest of the NSW state government and Sydney Festival, which is Australia's largest annual cultural event, showcasing a broad spectrum of Australian and international dance, theatre, visual arts and music.
As festival director Lindy Hume told IANS: "There are only a handful of living artists in any genre whose work is instantly and easily embraced in both eastern and western cultures - and one of them is A.R. Rahman. The message of this concert is one of harmony and cultural understanding between Australia and India, two countries who share so much more than a national day (Jan 26) and love of cricket."
The mesmerising performance, enhanced by state-of-the-art digital projections, ended on a high with the magical power and vitality of "Jai Ho" reaching a crescendo in "Vande Mataram" as fireworks lit the night sky

Against the backdrop of concerns over hacking of crucial official websites, central security agencies have again warned the government about the use of multi-tasking blackberry instruments by some of the officials working in sensitive ministries including the Prime Minister’s office.
Agencies have also cautioned against the practice of connecting official computers and laptops with unsecured internet connections by some bureaucrats thus compromising security.
With hackers mainly from China very active and having penetrated deep into the cyber space, the security agencies had asked all ministries especially the Defence, External, Home and the PMO to separate their official computers with those used for internet connection.
The recommendations of the central security agencies seem to have gone unheeded. An official maintained that their suggestion was only recommendatory in nature. The National Technical and Research Organisation (NTRO) also circulated the Do’s and Don’ts to key ministries recently after attempts from hackers were noticed.
A quick random check was carried out during which it was found that some of the officials in the Prime Minister’s Office were using Blackberry services and had linked their official emails on the handset, which is not allowed.
A PMO official said there were routine attempts to hack various systems. The PMO has its own system in place to protect against such attempts, the official said, adding, there has been no security breach.
Intense negotiations were held prior to the starting the Blackberry services in India and finally the Department of Telecom in 2008 decided to side-step the opposition of the intelligence agencies and permit the services, being operated by Canadian-firm Research-In-Motion (RIM).
Another problem dogging the cyber space in the country was constant use of official computers by the officials in key ministries despite a warning from security agencies not to link them with the internet.
Security of many of the computers in the Ministry of External Affairs and its Missions abroad was compromised with forcing a security audit of the machines and segregating the virus-affected ones out of the system.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has a separate server for its computers and there have been no attempts to hack its system since it has another server with internet facility. A surprise check of all the computers was being carried at regular intervals.
The National Informatics Centre, the organisation responsible for maintaining government servers and providing internet and intranet facilities to various key ministries, had also faced hacking problem. According to a Canadian firm SecDev Group, which investigated the hacking of the Dalai Lama's computer in late 2008, as many as 12 computers of NIC had been affected by the Chinese hackers.
The group also surprised the government when it mentioned that computers in nine Indian Missions abroad which included key countries like the US and the UK had been affected by the Chinese hackers.
Giving details, the report said the GhostNet system directs infected computers to download a Trojan, known as ghost RAT, which allows attackers to gain complete, real-time control. These instances of ghost RAT are consistently controlled from commercial internet access accounts located on the island of Hainan, People's Republic of China.
"Our investigation reveals that GhostNet is capable of taking full control of infected computers, including searching and downloading specific files, and covertly operating attached devices, including microphones and web cameras.
“China is actively developing an operational capacity in cyberspace, correctly identifying it as the domain in which it can achieve strategic parity, if not superiority, over the military establishments of the United States and its allies.
“Chinese cyber warfare doctrine is well developed, and significant resources have been invested by the People's Liberation Army and security services in developing defensive and offensive capabilities," the report said.
According to them, an email message arrives in the target's inbox carrying the malware in an attachment or web link. The attackers' objective is to get the target to open the attachment or malicious link so that the malicious code can be executed, it said.

The delivery of aid to victims of Haiti's earthquake is still being slowed by bottlenecks, aid workers say.
UN and Oxfam staff are finally bringing food and water to some parts of the capital Port-au-Prince, but the airport remains clogged with loaded planes.
Many survivors of Tuesday's quake have become desperate as they wait for aid, and many are trying to leave the city.
Leaving for Haiti, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the quake was the worst humanitarian crisis for decades.
The UN has launched an appeal for $562m (£346m) intended to help three million people for six months, while some two million people are thought to need emergency relief.

Relief is finally getting through to some in Port-au-Prince but it's a trickle - not a flood - of the aid needed by the people here.
The US navy is using helicopters to drop supplies of bottled water using soldiers on the ground to keep control. The UN also has distribution points handing out high-energy bars to the hungry.
But demand is outstripping supply - with food and water being taken faster than they can pass it out.
Meanwhile first reports from the epicentre of the earthquake suggest the damage is even more dramatic than in the capital.
The BBC's Mark Doyle in Leogane, west of Port-au-Prince, described the scene as "apocalyptic", with thousands left homeless and almost every building destroyed.
But in a sign of hope, rescuers pulled a woman alive from rubble on Sunday. Twelve others were rescued on Saturday, the UN said.
There are also security concerns amid reports of looting.
The US Southern Command's Lt-Gen Ken Keen said that while streets were largely calm there had been an increase in violence.
"We are going to have to address the situation of security," he said, quoted by the Associated Press.
"We've had incidents of violence that impede our ability to support the government of Haiti and answer the challenges that this country faces."
AFP news agency quoted one of its photographers as saying police had opened fire on looters in a Port-au-Prince market, killing at least one of them.
Airport 'overwhelmed'
Correspondents say although the amount of supplies getting through is still small, there is a sense of movement at last.
The UN World Food Programme has been handing out aid packages containing food, while UK charity Oxfam has been distributing water.
US troops said they had set up their first foothold outside the airport to deliver aid carried in by helicopters.
But many victims are still not receiving any aid, as the airport remains a bottleneck. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Kim Bolduc says getting supplies out to them from the planes is still a major hurdle.
"The Haitian airport now is overwhelmed," said UN Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, Edmond Mulet.
The port is badly damaged, and many roads still blocked by corpses and debris.
David Wimhurst, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti, said aid was being delivered as quickly as possible.
"Aid is going out but it's simply impossible in 24 hours to bring in enough aid to instantly feed all these people, many of whom are in places that are inaccessible," he said.
The Haitian and Dominican Republic governments are planning an alternative 130km (80 miles) humanitarian road corridor to deliver relief supplies from the southern Dominican town of Barahona, the UN reports.
The UN has warned about fuel shortages, which it says could affect humanitarian operations.
"Fuel is the key issue," Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told the BBC. "We need fuel to bring in supplies and carry the wounded."
'No help'
The UN says up to 80-90% of buildings in Leogane, about 19km west of Port-au-Prince, have been destroyed.
map
Satellite and close-up images of Port-au-Prince devastation
One survivor in the town said he had come to Haiti from America for his mother's funeral, only for his wife to be killed in the earthquake. He said that so far people in the area had received no help of any kind.
"We don't have any aid, nothing at all," he said. "No food, no water, no medical, no doctors."
Estimates of how many people died following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday have varied.
The Pan American Health Organization put the death toll at 50,000-100,000, while Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said 100,000 "would seem a minimum".
A UN official has said aid workers are dealing with a disaster "like no other" in UN memory because the country had been "decapitated".
Three ministers and several senators are reported to have been killed.
The US has launched what President Barack Obama called "one of the largest relief efforts in its history" following the quake.
She told Haitians that the US would be "here today, tomorrow and for the time ahead", asserting that "Haiti can come back even better and stronger in the future".

New Delhi: Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has said Pakistan "needs to do much more" to address India's concerns over continuing cross-border terror before dialogue can resume between the two neighbours.
When asked about the recent spate of terrorist attacks, rockets attacks and repeated firing across the international border in Kashmir from the Pakistan side, Rao said that Pakistani groups are involved, possibly with support from the Pakistani authorities.
"Terrorism directed against India continues from territory under Pakistan control and from Pakistan," Rao told Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN’s show Devil's Advocate.
"All the events you have seen over the last few days basically point to the basic and undeniable fact that the infrastructure of terrorism which operates out of Pakistan and territory under Pakistan control has not been dismantled...," she said.
"...and it continues to be directed against the Indian people. It affects ordinary people," she added.
"Look at what has been happening in Srinagar over the last few weeks. Look at the incidents of infiltration that have gone up despite the fact that this is cold weather," she said.
"In winter traditionally we have not had so many incidents of infiltration, but those continue. They clearly point to the continuation of efforts directed against our territory, directed in order to foment violence in Kashmir and terrorist incidents," Rao said.
She indicated that the recent attack at Lal Chowk in Srinagar and increased cross-border incursions are being directed with support from elements in Pakistan.
"Let me put it this way. I think the experience over the last two decades would make it very clear to us that this has been an instrument of state policy which has been pursued by agencies within Pakistan," she replied when asked about the involvement of Pakistani agencies in these attacks.
"We have very little or no evidence to suggest otherwise," she added.
Critical of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's assertion that his government is committed to fulfilling his father-in-law Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's pledge for a thousand-year war to "liberate" Kashmir, Rao said militancy and violence in Kashmir has been accompanied by rhetoric directed against India and all forms and means of propaganda that comes across from the Pakistan side.
"So, rhetoric, militancy and violence, together they make a very combustible combination," she said, adding that it poisons people's minds.
Asserting that India has never turned its back on dialogue, Rao said that terrorism affects the climate of dialogue and the progress of this dialogue. "And when Pakistan refers to the need to resume composite dialogue, we say you have to create the right atmosphere for that dialogue to move forward," she said.
"We wait and we hope Pakistan can do more," Rao replied when asked whether Pakistan is effectively responding to the terror India faces which emanates out of Pakistani soil.
Rao's comments come close on the heels of a telephonic conversation during which External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi to expedite probe into the Mumbai attacks and bring terrorists linked to the carnage to justice.

President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday led the nation in mourning the death of veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu. Tributes poured in from politicians across the country.
While Patil said "the nation has lost a veteran and eminent public figure," Manmohan Singh said Basu was a politician to whom he often turned for "sagacious advice".
Basu was a leader "who displayed his abilities as a leader of the people, an able administrator and eminent statesman", the president said in a statement.
"In the years after he relinquished the chief ministership, he continued to be looked upon as an elder statesman, whose advice was sought by many political leaders in the state," she added.
The 95-year-old leader died in Kolkata Sunday after a prolonged illness.
In a message to Jyoti Basu's son Chandan, Manmohan Singh said: "He was a powerful regional voice in the national political scene and helped to strengthen Indian federalism... He was a man of great integrity with a deep commitment to secular values."
"I have personally had a very long association with Basu. On many occasions in my career, I turned to him for his sagacious advice on all matters, whether they related to West Bengal or to issues of national importance," he added.
Vice President Hamid Ansari said Basu had left behind a void that would be difficult to fill. "His sagacity and leadership at both the state and the national level have been a source of inspiration and guidance," Ansari said in a statement.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that Basu led for several years expressed "profound grief", saying he was a Marxist who was not dogmatic.
"Jyoti Basu was a Marxist who never wavered in his convictions. He was a Marxist who was not dogmatic and continued to learn from his vast experience in charting out the course for the party," the CPI-M politburo said.
"There will be none like Jyoti Basu again," was how CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat Sunday saluted a man he prevented from becoming the prime minister in 1996.
Karat, who influenced the CPI-M to block Basu from taking charge of the United Front government in 1996, said that the former West Bengal chief minister "was a great leader of the CPI-M, the Left movement and India. With his passing away, an era has passed".
Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja paid glowing tributes to the Marxist patriarch, saying he could have proved to be a great prime minister.
"He (Basu) proved that the coalition of Left parties would work successfully and serve the people greatly. He could have proved to be a great prime minister also," Raja said.
Former Lok Sabha speaker and Communist leader Somnath Chatterjee said he had lost someone like his father.
"When things started to go bad (in Left front), he was sad. He was sad about what happened with me. I used to consult him on all matters. For the second time, I have lost somebody like my father," said an emotional Chatterjee.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said he would miss a well-wisher.
"In his death, I lost a great well-wisher, the country has lost an able administrator, an outstanding parliamentarian and a charismatic political leader," Mukherjee told reporters.
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee called for a 72-hour mourning in West Bengal.
"He was the first and last chapter of the Communist movement in India," she said after emerging out of the AMRI hospital in Kolkata. "He (Basu) will be remembered for his political achievements because of his pioneering role in the country's Left movement."
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the staunchest anti-Communist force in the country, mourned the death of the Marxist leader, describing him as a "role model for Indian politics".
In a moving tribute, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley told reporters here that Basu, who was West Bengal's chief minister for 23 long years, was one of the "tallest leaders" in Indian politics with "high credibility".
"He was devoted to his ideology and played the longest innings in Indian politics," Jaitley said.
Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters in Kolkata: "He was a colossus who straddled India's political scene for many decades. Not only the leader of West Bengal, but of India. He was a great patriot, great democrat, great parliamentarian and great source of inspiration. He served the people of India to the best," he said.
Former prime minister and senior BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee said Basu's demise had "ended a chapter in the country's politics".

New Delhi: It is a New Year calendar on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra - capturing her in various moods and colourful saris as she connects with voters in Uttar Pradesh. But the ruling Congress party refuses to say whether it is an indication that the important Gandhi family member will be finally joining politics.
The calender has also been posted on a website, pressbrief.in, that is a depository of information on the Gandhi family.
Congress sources say the calendar was posted on the website on January 12, Priyanka's birthday. It shows her interacting with voters in Rai Bareli and Amethi.
The calendar has led to conjecture about the possibility of her joining active politics in the coming months.
Available on the web, it can be downloaded by any person wishing to have a Priyanka Gandhi calendar.
Besides the 'Priyanka Gandhi Vadra - Rae BareliAmethi Calendar 2010', the website also contains New Year calendars on Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.
Priyanka Gandhi campaigned in Rae Bareli and Amethi, her mother and brother's parliamentary constituencies respectively, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections but took questions from the media on national issues. There have been demands from party workers that she should join active politics.
The Congress refused to comment if the calendar signalled the younger Gandhi sibling joining politics.
Party spokesman Manish Tewari said the decision should be left to her will.
"There have been demands from time to time for her to join politics but the decision should be left to her will. It is her personal decision," Tewari said, and declined to speak about the calendar.
Party sources said that website 'pressbrief.in' was launched by people connected with Rahul Gandhi's campaign for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2007. It has information, photos and videos of rallies and speeches of the Gandhi family.
Another New Year calendar brought out to mark the 125th anniversary of the Congress features Priyanka Gandhi on its second page along with her brother Rahul Gandhi. The calendar has been brought out by Pradip Rathi, general secretary of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.

A popular perception of Bollywood films in the West is that they’re musicals. This notion is only partly correct.
Many are left disappointed to learn that the stars of these films can’t sing. They lip-sync. Fine vocalists behind those songs rarely get their due. Few know music composers by face. Dance steps that movie-stars perform to aren’t the toughest to imitate either. The leading man of our cinema is often not even the best actor of his own film crew. He is just the better looking.
This makes the Bollywood star, hogging all the attention and money alone, the most over-rated figure of any pop-culture.
To be fair, Shahid Kapoor can dance. He can certainly move his body, even if his performances don’t move you much. This claims to be a dance film entirely. On paper, the proposition doesn’t read half as brain-dead as it appears on the big screen.
Since he was born, gauging by his looks, everyone assumed the boy in this film would be a hero one day. He began to believe in the myth.
We’re meant to follow the struggles of this wannabe, determined as he is to make it in showbiz. Even if this show-town looks anything but the grimy human factories of Lokhandwala the filmmakers know better. The Delhi, the hero considers back-home, is a mini Punjab full of Sikhs.
He rehearses dance on the giant Mumbai wooden floors Jennifer Lopez may have practiced on before. Govinda, Hrithik Roshan, Shiamak Davar, he says, are the legends of his field. His tiny apartment from the inside may well be the shanty of big-city America. When we weren’t looking, and he had hardly dough for breakfast, the hero also packed in for himself the 8-pack abs.
He does the multiple rounds of film auditions. The journey, and its conclusion, is predictably known. The music should take care of the rest. It doesn’t.
Songs don’t take the motionless picture forward. This is not a musical. The filmmaker here is merely a director of music videos, and there is one after half a dozen others: “Back straight. Attitude. Feel the music.” Sure.
Between those patchy, over-decorated music television tracks, the banal hero fails a courier boy’s job; sleeps in a car (when he could’ve moved in with his girl); joins a school to teach dance; enlists kids to win a competition; enlists himself to win a talent hunt… The show goes on, and so on, and so forth. As does the refrain: “Tu star ban sakta hai. Tu star ban gaya. Mein star banaunga….” (Whatever that means).
We may as well fear for the minor effect on li'l Gauravs and Sameers taking such silliness vaguely seriously. Seeking 'nautanki' fame is anyway turning into a bit of a national disease.

The ‘Mozart of Madras’ who won two Oscar awards for the soundtrack to the hit movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ revealed that the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker was keen on making music with him, The Daily Telegraph reported.
“I met him two months before he died and he expressed an interest in working with me,” Rahman said.
“Meeting him was everything and changed my life. He loved stuff I did and I loved stuff he did. He was such a nice person,” he added.
Jackson was planning to collaborate with Rahman for a unity anthem that the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker wanted to use in his planned O2 concert series, the musician had earlier said in his blog.
“He was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho’s chorus. He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the lines of ‘We are the World’ for him. I nodded in awe,” Rahman had written in his blog while paying tribute to the pop icon after his sudden death in June last year.
Rahman who has also been nominated for this year’s Grammys’ is set to perform to about 80,000 people at his free concert on Saturday at Parramatta Park, as a part of 34th Sydney Festival.

Salman Khan won’t have to make much of an effort to take his film Veer, an Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani Moviez production, to international audiences. “The grandeur, budget, sets, its action, writing, the acting, cinematography, and score put it on par with Hollywood films like Gladiator, Troy and Braveheart,” said a trade analyst. Coincidentally, Mel Gibson wrote Braveheart while Salman penned Veer himself !
“Salman is the ideal star to play a warrior; his gravelly voice and impressive physique combine to give him a huge presence. He is larger than life and adds charisma to a vengeance-driven heroic character,” said Galani. Director Anil Sharma without the use of computer effects has given Veer the feel of a classic epic project. “It was shot extensively in Rajasthan where action sequences involving thousands of fighters, horses, hundreds of elephants and camels, including huge sequences such as a train robbery and a full-fledged war were shot. Shootings also took place across the United Kingdom using chariots, vintage costumes, horse carts and items peculiar to the late 19th century. In fact, it’s the first Bollywood film that has been shot in Buckingham Palace,” said a source from the film unit.
Salman took almost 20 years to write this saga of a freedom fighter, a Pindari soldier who fought for social justice and independence. “Rarely does an entertainment house get the opportunity to work with superstars to produce a movie of the grandeur and scale of Veer; which is the magic of storytelling on a large canvas, a story written by the lead star himself. At Eros, we believe this could well kickstart a trend in Indian cinema,” says Managing Director and Group CEO – India, Eros International Media Ltd, A P Parigi, about the film that’s “waiting to break records on January 22”.

The film depicts life in an elite engineering institute and though there is no explicit reference to IITs, Five Point Someone, the novel written by Chetan Bhagat on which the film is based, talks about life on an IIT campus.
As soon as the institute re-opened after the winter vacation on December 30, a demand for screening the film was placed at the Gymkhana, IITs students' body. So, the Technology Film Society, as the film club of the institute is called, got in touch with the distributor of the film in Kolkata, Kapurchand, who agreed to pull off the film from a city hall for a week so that the institute could hold its shows. "We will have to shell out quite a bit, but it would be worth the effort," said Pulak Banerjee, manager of film club.
Almost all of the 9000-strong student body of the institute, along with the 550-strong faculty and 1200 strong staff wish to see 3 Idiots. The film club is having a trying time as the auditorium has only 900 seats.
Ironically, there's hardly a student who has not watched the film. But students are more than enthusiastic for a repeat viewing with their IIT mates. "I have seen the film but nothing compares like seeing it on campus with my friends. It is like seeing campus life getting enacted by popular actors," said Shubham Matah, student vice-president of the institute.
Abhiradhika Agarwal, an architecture student cancelled her plans to spend the weekend in Kolkata to see the film on campus.
Even teachers sound excited. "I wanted to see the film as newspapers are full of praise for 3 Idiots. However, going to Kolkata to watch the film in a multiplex is a tall order. Now that the film would be screened in the campus, I would not miss the chance," said
V K Tewari, faculty member of the institute. Manish Bhattacharya, a teacher of chemistry and the president of the Gymkhana, confesses that while he is not exactly a film enthusiast, he is happy with the screening "because the film is based on a story on the IITs."

The Chinese managed to hack Google accounts of human activists and many businesses as they took advantage of vulnerabilities in Microsoft's Interne
t Explorer (IE) browser which were previously unknown, according to reports.
Google has threatened to close its operations and offices in China after hacking and "phishing" attempts to break into gmail accounts of US, China and Europe based Chinese human rights activists.
The company, which agreed to censor of Google.cn at its launch in 2006, has also said it is "no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn."
Reports quoted security researcher McAfee Inc. as saying that IE is vulnerable on all of Microsoft's operating systems, including Windows 7.
What is now termed as 'operation Aurora', is being perceived as a quite sophisticated attack. the report added that 'phishers' fooled users into clicking on a link to a website. This website then secretly downloaded malicious software onto their computers. The spyware allowed the hackers to take remote control of the computers.
Microsoft has already admitted in its blog that IE browser might be used by hackers to remotely spy on infected computers. It is likely to unveil a software update for the browser. "We need to take all cyber attacks, not just this one, seriously," Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told CNBC. "We have a whole team of people that responds in very real time to any report that it may have something to do with our software, which we don't know yet," he said.
Google has said that "these accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users' computers."

After declaring a crusade against Maoists last week, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee made a virtual volte face during Friday’s rally at Jhargram.
Making all possible efforts to woo Naxals, she invited them for talks on development and even offered to mediate with the Centre. And her offer was accepted ¿ at least by the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA). But much to her chagrin, their choice of mediator was her estranged parliamentarian Kabir Suman.
“We welcome the call by Mamata, but we want to talk to Trinamool MP Kabir Suman only. We believe him and think that he is above politics,” said Dhanapati, PCAPA leader.
Dhanapati’s response came after Banerjee asked them “with folded hands” to shun violence. “I am ready to touch your feet. Give up arms and talk about development,” she said at the sparsely-attended rally. “If you want expansion of railway projects, job opportunities, schools and hospitals, you are free to hold talks.”
Banerjee’s comments were in stark contrast to what she had said about a week ago in Kolkata, when she had virtually announced a war on Maoists.
On Friday, she made it clear that she will do everything for the development of Jangalmahal.
“I want to build railway tracks till Belpahari and connect the area with the rest of the state,” she said. “I have plans to run two pairs of trains between Midnapore and Jhargram. I am considering a proposal to ensure a stoppage of the Bhubaneswar-Delhi Rajdhani Express at Jhargram. If necessary I can convince the Centre to prepare a special package for the overall development of Jhargram and Jangalmahal.”

Nepal currently imports 20 MW of electricity from India from the Tanakpur barrage situated in the Indo-Nepal border.
Besides the additional 30 MW of power which India has agreed to provide, Nepal has requested for another 30 MW of electricity to deal with the power deficit, Bhattarai said.
At present, Kathmandu and other major cities of the country are going through an eight-hour electricity cut daily due to the low level of water in the reservoirs of the major power stations of Nepal.
