Salman Khan won’t have to make much of an effort to take his film Veer, an Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani Moviez production, to international audiences. “The grandeur, budget, sets, its action, writing, the acting, cinematography, and score put it on par with Hollywood films like Gladiator, Troy and Braveheart,” said a trade analyst. Coincidentally, Mel Gibson wrote Braveheart while Salman penned Veer himself !

“Salman is the ideal star to play a warrior; his gravelly voice and impressive physique combine to give him a huge presence. He is larger than life and adds charisma to a vengeance-driven heroic character,” said Galani. Director Anil Sharma without the use of computer effects has given Veer the feel of a classic epic project. “It was shot extensively in Rajasthan where action sequences involving thousands of fighters, horses, hundreds of elephants and camels, including huge sequences such as a train robbery and a full-fledged war were shot. Shootings also took place across the United Kingdom using chariots, vintage costumes, horse carts and items peculiar to the late 19th century. In fact, it’s the first Bollywood film that has been shot in Buckingham Palace,” said a source from the film unit.

Salman took almost 20 years to write this saga of a freedom fighter, a Pindari soldier who fought for social justice and independence. “Rarely does an entertainment house get the opportunity to work with superstars to produce a movie of the grandeur and scale of Veer; which is the magic of storytelling on a large canvas, a story written by the lead star himself. At Eros, we believe this could well kickstart a trend in Indian cinema,” says Managing Director and Group CEO – India, Eros International Media Ltd, A P Parigi, about the film that’s “waiting to break records on January 22”.

Yash Raj Films' Pyaar Impossible adopts the beauty and the geek formula, but its director Jugal Hansraj does an average job of handling the subject.

It's no college love story, as has been projected in the promos. But the film does begin at university, with ample campus shots to make you feel sorry you went to one with less imposing buildings.

Uday Chopra is Abhay Sharma, a bespectacled geek, clad in boring trousers and shirts with a half-sleeves sweater and braces most of the time. Abhay is head over heels in love with the hottest babe on campus, Alisha (Priyanka Chopra).

Alisha is a spoilt brat of a girl, and after a particularly tipsy night in which she almost drowns (no prizes for guessing who saves her), the girl is out of college. Abhay's fantasy and he part ways.

Seven years later, Abhay is still single and still geeky – a replica of his dad (Anupam Kher). He is trying to sell new software he's built, which eventually gets stolen by a shrewd businessman Siddhu (Dino Morea). Siddhu is about to sell the software to a firm in Singapore, and our man Abhay lands up there to exercise his intellectual property rights.

No surprise that Abhay bumps into Alisha there who happens to be the company's PR official. But rather than taking her help to win his case, Abhay ends up being her nanny after finding out she's a divorced mom with a six-year-old kid, Tanya.

Sounds familiar? You bet. All the nanny and babysitter drama is straight out of so many English films, and you kinda don't know where the film is headed. At the same time, it's predictable.

The second half is more watchable, as Abhay endears himself to the kid and eventually wins her mom over – but with a lot of help from the kid, of course. In fact, it's Tanya who ultimately makes the two come together. (It was a dog in Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!, and a kid in Pyaar Impossible just like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – why can't two adults do it for themselves?)

The best moment of the film, though, is when Abhay is about to tell Alisha "everything", and the bell rings…. Kudos to Jugal and the actors for that.

But sadly, the humour in the film fails to generate any laughs. Surprising, since it's the 'Dhoom' Uday Chopra we have here.

Priyanka Chopra lifts an average film up several notches. Without her presence, the film is nothing. She is carrying it on her shoulders, almost – there are a few places where she looks bored and is getting on with it. But she seems fully in character and has truly matured as an actor, following up on a successful 2008 and a Kaminey in 2009.

Uday Chopra seems to fit in the role with ease, with his mannerisms and look almost perfect (except a strand of grey hair visible in his sideburns in one scene). In his effort to please his love Alisha, it almost seems like the actor Uday is trying his best to please the audience, who've more or less rejected him as a main lead (although loved him in roles like Dhoom).
Dino Morea is confident as the menacing Siddhu aka Varun Sanghvi. It would do him good to stick to negative roles.

The little girl who plays Priyanka's bratty kid Tanya is super cute and makes you smile. Also, with her eyes, she could pass on as Jugal Hansraj's daughter! Anupam Kher is good as Uday's father, but has more of a cameo than a full-fledged role.

But in the end, the film works only post interval, when the 'feel good' mood takes over. The parallel software story doesn't quite generate too much interest, although that's the reason Romeo meets Juliet again and wins her.

But what was refreshing was, the hero doesn't pull a face when he comes to know his love of seven years is divorced and has a kid. He simply accepts both. Not that he has a choice, but then there's a message there.

Verdict: There is nothing new in Pyaar Impossible. Watch it only if you don't mind a predictable story with a hot Priyanka Chopra, and some catchy music.

Shahid Kapoor is controversy's favourite child. The latest is, the actor forced his Chance Pe Dance director Ken Ghosh to delete the passionate smooch from the film. Reportedly, Shahid felt that it wouldn't be good for his image when he saw the final cut of the film.
"I've stopped reacting to gossip," Shahid tells me. So what's the truth? "The truth is, there's no smooch in the film. It was never conceptualised, hence it was not filmed. It just doesn't exist. As simple as that," Shahid clarifies.
Meanwhile, Shahid has decided against signing any film for the time being. "I am channelizing all my energies on my father's [Pankaj Kapoor] directorial debut. We plan to begin shooting in March. That's the only film I have on hand right now," he says.
Reportedly, the film is inspired from the Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun. "Well, the only similarity is that I play a naval officer in the film. In the past, Rajesh Khanna and Shah Rukh Khan too had played naval officers, but that doesn't mean they were inspired by Top Gun. Dad's making a love story, which makes it entirely different from that film," Shahid states.

Genelia D'Souza is upset with rumours of her wedding with actor Riteish Deshmukh. The actress says she isn't getting married to anyone for the time being.

"To set the record straight, I am not getting married to anyone. I have always maintained that my personal life is not something I would like to discuss. But this time since it was something that would affect my family, I decided to take a stand," said Genelia in a statement released here Tuesday.

"My films and my brands are my priority as of now and I'd like to keep it that way. And if I do decide to settle down, you will hear it from me when as and when it happens," she added.

A tabloid had reported the romance brewed between Genelia and Riteish on the sets of Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003) and that they are planning to get married this year.


Genelia is right now looking forward to the release of Chance Pe Dance. She is paired with Shahid Kapoor in the film, which is releasing on Jan 15.

While, director Vishal Bharadwaj has signed only Priyanka in the lead so far, it is still not known who will be playing the seven husbands opposite Priyanka. But it is definitely going to be interesting to watch who director Vishal Bharadwaj will be choosing for the seven roles.

To start with, the phone has a very decent 5 megapixel camera. It remains to be seen how good the imaging actually is. On the connectivity front, there is Bluetooth with A2DP and EDGE. Wi-Fi seems to be missing. There is an all important FM Radio thrown in as well. You can also record from FM Radio- which is cool. The video recording is pegged at 30 FPS . What is unclear is the resolution of the videos which, in fact, is the all important thing here.
