A Priyanka Gandhi calendar available online

Posted by blog master Saturday, January 16, 2010

New Delhi: It is a New Year calendar on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra - capturing her in various moods and colourful saris as she connects with voters in Uttar Pradesh. But the ruling Congress party refuses to say whether it is an indication that the important Gandhi family member will be finally joining politics.

The calender has also been posted on a website, pressbrief.in, that is a depository of information on the Gandhi family.

Congress sources say the calendar was posted on the website on January 12, Priyanka's birthday. It shows her interacting with voters in Rai Bareli and Amethi.

The calendar has led to conjecture about the possibility of her joining active politics in the coming months.

Available on the web, it can be downloaded by any person wishing to have a Priyanka Gandhi calendar.

Besides the 'Priyanka Gandhi Vadra - Rae BareliAmethi Calendar 2010', the website also contains New Year calendars on Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Priyanka Gandhi campaigned in Rae Bareli and Amethi, her mother and brother's parliamentary constituencies respectively, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections but took questions from the media on national issues. There have been demands from party workers that she should join active politics.

The Congress refused to comment if the calendar signalled the younger Gandhi sibling joining politics.

Party spokesman Manish Tewari said the decision should be left to her will.

"There have been demands from time to time for her to join politics but the decision should be left to her will. It is her personal decision," Tewari said, and declined to speak about the calendar.

Party sources said that website 'pressbrief.in' was launched by people connected with Rahul Gandhi's campaign for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2007. It has information, photos and videos of rallies and speeches of the Gandhi family.

Another New Year calendar brought out to mark the 125th anniversary of the Congress features Priyanka Gandhi on its second page along with her brother Rahul Gandhi. The calendar has been brought out by Pradip Rathi, general secretary of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.

During talks between External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who is here on a three-day visit, and Premier Madhav Kumar Nepal yesterday, India agreed to supply an additional 30 MW of power, the Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Rajan Bhattarai said.

Nepal currently imports 20 MW of electricity from India from the Tanakpur barrage situated in the Indo-Nepal border.

Besides the additional 30 MW of power which India has agreed to provide, Nepal has requested for another 30 MW of electricity to deal with the power deficit, Bhattarai said.

At present, Kathmandu and other major cities of the country are going through an eight-hour electricity cut daily due to the low level of water in the reservoirs of the major power stations of Nepal.

Bajaj Auto net zooms three-fold to Rs 475 crore

Posted by blog master Tuesday, January 12, 2010

The Bombay Stock Exchange, in Mumbai, is Asia'...Image via Wikipedia
MUMBAI/PUNE: Bajaj Auto, India’s second-largest motorcycle maker, on Tuesday said its fiscal third quarter net profit almost tripled, as strong
sales buoyed by an improving economic scenario more than offset a sharp rise in input costs. The Pune-based Bajaj group flagship said net profit in the October-December period rose to Rs 475 crore, from Rs 164 crore last year. Its revenue in the same period surged 57% to Rs 3,295 crore.

The quarter saw an increase in cost of raw material, mainly steel and in the price of components. “However, due to higher volumes and by leveraging fixed cost and cost management, we were able to achieve operating margin at 22% during the third quarter, against 14.5% last year,” said finance vice-president Kevin D’sa.

Bajaj Auto, which competes strongly with market leader Hero Honda in the high margin two-wheeler market, sold 809,218 units in the third quarter, a 64% jump over the previous year. The robust sales reflected a turnaround in the economic situation, which had been hit adversely in 2008, as tight liquidity and slow demand dented auto sales.

Analysts said this has been Bajaj Auto’s best quarter, surpassing even the second quarter. The strategy to focus on ‘bigger and sportier’ motorcycles helped the company grow its market share, they said. “The results weren’t surprising and reflects the underlining efforts of the company in regaining lost market share,” said Mahantesh Sabarad, an analyst at Centrum Broking.

Apart from increased market share, Bajaj Auto has been able to boost its cash flow. Mr D’sa said it has surplus cash and cash equivalents of Rs 2,625 crore, against Rs 933 crore as on March last year. Shares of Bajaj Auto ended 1.7%, up at Rs 1,698.10 on BSE on Tuesday. After countering the slow demand scenario last year, Indian two-wheeler makers have focused on the growing rural market through bigger products, which has helped in increasing volumes and margins.

A Bajaj Auto executive said while the shift away from 100cc economy motorcycles initially did put pressure on sales, it has paid in terms of market share and profitability. Industry sales in the motorcycle segment rose by 37%, while Bajaj Auto sales rose 72% at 7.11 lakh units. The newly-launched Pulsar 135 LS is expected to add to the company’s market share in motorcycles and enable the Pulsar brand reach one million-a-year in sales. During the third quarter, Bajaj Auto also launched upgraded versions of its three-wheeler passenger carriers. Exports rose 27% to 2.73 lakh units.

China becomes world's biggest exporter

Posted by blog master Sunday, January 10, 2010

China's rapid industrialisation and dash for growth is sparking environmental concerns. Photograph: PETER PARKS/AFP/Getty Images

China completed a resurgent 2009 with a huge rise in exports establishing China as the world's biggest exporter, ahead of Germany, for the first time. The juggernaut Chinese economy also revealed record monthly imports of crude oil and a vast renewed appetite for iron ore and copper.

Trade in December, according to figures from China's customs office, showed a massive 17.7% year-on-year jump in exports, dramatically outpacing a forecast for 4% growth. The huge increase came after 13 months of decline.

Crude oil imports averaged more than 5m barrels a day for a month for the first time in December, up by more than a fifth from November, as the country sucked in raw materials at a faster pace than expected.

Imports jumped by 56%, pushing China's overall trade surplus in the month down by 4% from November instead of the expected 3% increase.

While some experts said much of the increase was due to seasonal factors and quirks in commodities markets, it appears that the strength of demand from China is signalling a further rise in global trade during 2010.

Imports of unwrought copper rose by more than a quarter from November to 369,368 tonnes, more than expected, while copper scrap imports jumped an even bigger 46%. Soya bean imports hit a record 4.78m tonnes in the month, with a surge in supplies from the United States and Brazil. Exports of aluminium and finished steel were also up strongly. China's economy is predicted to grow 9.5% in 2010, topping last year's expected figure.

The figure will be welcomed by business leaders who argue that China needs to shrug off the effects of the downturn if global trade is to recover. China is widely seen as a key engine of growth, especially as the US economy remains in the doldrums, with rising unemployment and many of its major manufacturing industries still badly hit.

However, the increased consumption of raw materials is likely to fuel criticism that China is failing to meet its environmental obligations. A dash for growth is seen as incompatible with the need to minimise burning fossil fuels and felling rainforests. Open-cast copper mining and soya bean farming on previously protected rainforest, have been top of environmental concerns for several years.

The development research centre of the state council, a leading thinktank, said China's economy would remain robust as market-driven investment picked up while government-led stimulus spending slowed. It said real estate investment would buoy growth, while inflationary concerns remained mild.

China is understood to have bought oil contracts in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries to secure oil supplies ahead of a boom in manufacturing. US and Brazilian farmers are also understood to be ready to increase supplies of Soya beans as domestic demand from the meat industry, which uses soya beans as a feedstuff, soars to record levels.

Adding to environmental concerns, China's steel mills undertook a massive production drive in 2009, partly in response to a $585bn government stimulus plan. Disregarding a 60% collapse in the export market, they produced almost half the world's steel in 2009.

Ishqiya tracks are soul-stirring

Posted by blog master Saturday, January 9, 2010

Ishqiya
Music Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Lyricist: Gulzar
Singers: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sukhwinder Singh, Mika Singh, Rekha Bhardwaj and Clinton Cerejo
Rating: *** 1/2

Vishal Bhardwaj's track record as a composer has been very impressive and with Ishqiya he once again proves that he is not only a good filmmaker but also a brilliant musician.

It is an album to watch out for - most of the songs are hummable and could go on to become chartbusters.

Ishqiya, which stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan, has four originals and three remixes.

The album begins with the great composition titled Dil to bachcha hai. Sung by the brilliant Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the song instantly strikes a chord with the listener thanks to its retro feel and soothing orchestration.

It seems to be inspired by the music of a Raj Kapoor film and the accordion is being used in a track after a long time. It is hummable and one of the best songs of the album.

The remix of the song is equally appealing. In this version, the music is louder and more contemporary. However, there are no unnecessary beats or jarring sounds. Singer Clinton Cerejo pitches in with a few English lyrics.

Next in line is Ibn-e-batuta, the most ordinary of the lot. While it isn't brilliant, it's a peppy track sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Mika Singh. It doesn't appeal as much as the other songs.

The number has two remixes - one is a general remix version and the other is called the nucleya remix version. Both are average.

Then there is Ab mujhe koi in the soulful voice of Rekha Bhardwaj. There is something magical about Rekha's voice that lifts the song completely. The slow-paced track, coupled with the strumming of the guitar, the sound of the piano and drums, has a mesmerising effect on the listener.

Finally, the album offers another Rekha rendition, Badi Dheere jali. Starting with the music of the sitar, this semi-classical number, mixed with western music is a treat to the ears. The song slowly grows on you and presents a combination that is highly interesting. Rekha's vocals coupled with Bhardwaj's tunes create magic.

The album boasts of Bhardwaj's signature style as he has stayed away from the typical formula numbers. The soundtrack is a must hear. It is indeed a commendable job by the composer, who believes in experimentation and brings out something fresh always.

Snowstorm blasts South Korea

Posted by blog master Monday, January 4, 2010

Gyeongbokgung one of the five royal palaces of...Image via Wikipedia
SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- On the first workday of the New Year on Monday, South Koreans were greeted by heavy snowfall, which was bringing the city to a near standstill.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said 25.8 cm of snow had blanketed the Seoul metropolitan area Monday morning, the most amount of snow South Korea has seen since KMA first kept record in 1937, causing major disruptions in traffic and morning commutes.

Local media reported that a heavy snow warning was issued by the government as the plunging snowfall blocked entry to 13 major highways, and 19 principal roads, as well as 14 of the busiest streets in downtown Seoul.

The city officials also closed all mountain roads leading to the downtown area as Seoul's urban highways and riverside expressways were already gridlocked with commuting vehicles.

The unexpected snowstorm hit the city within a five-hour window in the early hours of Monday and traffic congestion forced morning commuters to abruptly switch to subways, buses, and public transportations that subsequently brought further chaos to the surging crowd.

However, buses were sluggish too, driving at a half-speed on icy roads, and commuters had to deal with a 30 minute to 1 hour delay in most areas.

For example, a bus drive that usually takes 1 hour from Bundang,a southern city of Seoul, to Yeoido, a large island located in Seoul, took about 4 hours Monday.

Subways experienced heavy delays as well, due to electrical malfunctions caused by snow and icy conditions, as services for the One train and Two train both were suspended for nearly 20 minutes.

"It usually takes less than half an hour to get to Gwanghwa Moon from Gangnam by subway but today it took me more than an hour," Oh Ryun-kwon told Xinhua.

Oh, who works in the Gwanghwa Moon business district of Seoul, was particularly disgruntled at the city's response to the snowstorm as he described the morning commute scene as "chaotic."

In fact, the city deployed 3,500 civil service personnel and 2,300 tons of calcium chloride as part of its snow removal work, but the snow was unexpectedly more than forecast and the record-setting snow is still falling unremittingly with heavier falls forecast until Monday night, making it hard to clean up.

The snowstorm was far-exceeding the initial forecast reported by the KMA Sunday night, which said approximately 2 cm to 7 cm of snow was expected on Monday.

"Snowfall began at 5 a.m. in Seoul and as much as 7.5 cm was recorded in just two hours. Snow is expected to stop falling Monday evening," a KMA official was quoted as saying by news agency Yonhap.

In an attempt to prevent further traffic delays, city officials announced on Monday that they will extend the subway operating hours and speed up train intervals during Tuesday's morning rush-hours.

The city of Incheon, on the other hand, has canceled all eleven ships scheduled to depart their port Monday as well, with flights from Gimpo Airport, the country's second largest airport located in the far western end of Seoul, canceling all flights for the first time since 2001.

In the meantime, the temperature in Seoul dropped furthermore Monday morning, causing most roads to freeze and become icy, exacerbating the traffic problem.

"With temperature plunging to minus 6.9 degrees Celsius early Monday morning, most roads in Seoul and neighboring areas are expected to become icy," said the weather official as he asked for special driver's discretion, according to Yonhap.

The country's weather office forecast an additional 2 cm of snow in the Seoul metropolitan area, as one of the officials described it as "the most in the last 100 years."

No flip-flop on Telangana, says Chidambaram

Posted by blog master Thursday, December 31, 2009

Flag of Telangana Rashtra Samithi. As per the ...Image via Wikipedia
New Delhi: Asserting that the government had done "no flip-flop" over separate statehood to Telangana, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said the January 5 meeting of eight political parties from Andhra Pradesh had been called to devise a "mechanism" and "lay a road map" on resolving the controversial issue.

"There is no flip-flop on part of the government over Telangana," said Chidambaram.

He said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in its common minimum programme had said that a separate Telangana state will be carved out from Andhra Pradesh "at an appropriate time" after due consultations and consensus.

Major political parties in Andhra Pradesh, he said, contested the 2009 Assembly elections on manifestos that "in one manner or other declared support for the formation of a separate state of Telangana".

Referring to two statements he had made on December 9 and on December 23 on the issue, the home minister said, "The central government simply responded to the situation in Andhra Pradesh."

"On December 9, it was announced that an appropriate resolution would be moved in the state assembly. I would like to highlight key words in the statement, they are 'process', 'appropriate resolution' and 'moved'. In the background of the minutes of the all party meeting, I would like to ask what was wrong with that statement," he queried.

And on December 23, after MPs and legislators from the state appeared divided over the issue, the government stressed the need to hold consultations with all political parties on the issue following a fortnight of protests in Andhra Pradesh for and against the separate state.

"We simply responded to the wishes of the people of Andhra Pradesh. I hope you don't call the January 5 meeting a flip-flop," Chidambaram added.

"The January 5 meeting is the first step in consultations. We have called the recognised parties in the state to devise a mechanism and lay a roadmap on the issue," he said.

Chidambaram also pointed out that other student groups and interested parties would also be consulted at a later stage.

High Court at Hyderabad, the main judicial bod...Image via Wikipedia

Hyderabad: The leader of opposition in Andhra Pradesh assembly and Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday demanded the immediate sacking of the state Governor N D Tiwari for his alleged involvement in a 'sex scandal' in Raja Bhavan in Hyderabad.

"The only way for him is to resign or the Centre should sack him," he said.

He made the demand after a local television channel broadcast a footage showing the happenings in Raj Bhavan late in the night. The television report also alleged that many important people, including some members of Parliament, were also involved in the sordid affair.

"It is very fortunate and shocking incident. The values and ethics have gone down and institutions which are like temples of democracy have been degenerated," he said.

"Never in the past have we witnessed such incidents," he said.

Naidu demanded a CBI inquiry in to the matter.

As ABN channel showed the footage, there was angry reaction from all over the state and the effigy of the governor was burnt in Vijaywada, Visakhapatanam, Kurnool, Hyderabad and many other places.

Several civil society organisations, including women's organisations, have demanded Governor Tiwari's immediate dismissal.

Interestingly, the expose came just when there was a talk of the centre changing the state governor in view of volatile political situation over the Telangana issue.

It may be mentioned here that Tiwari, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal, had faced a paternity case from a youth but Tiwari had refused to undergo DNA test.
