More thoughts on Carroll, Seahawks

If you can't get enough of the Pete Carroll-to-Seattle story, we're here to help.

The LA Times: "A Seahawks contingent including CEO Tod Leiweke interviewed Carroll in Los Angeles earlier this week to gauge his interest in replacing [Jim] Mora."

The LA Daily News already made a list of potential Carroll replacements: "1. Mike Riley. 2. Jeff Fisher. 3. Jack Del Rio."

Scott Wolf reports further: "We hear Pete Carroll's already putting together a coaching staff if he can reach a deal with the Seattle Seahawks."

The Orange County Register is taking a poll on potential Carroll replacements. Nick Daschel made his own list.

Oregon State fans need to be prepared for Mike Riley getting mentioned a bunch. The only way Riley can end such talk is by releasing a statement saying, "I'm not interested in being USC's next head coach. I will not talk to any USC representatives about the job. My Beavers are going to whip USC next year in Corvallis."

(I added that last part for Beavers fans who are mad that Riley's name keeps coming up).

Mark Wicker has this insight: "Carroll certainly has the right to pursue whatever dreams he has, and he has given USC perhaps its best football run in history. But when he goes out of his way to discourage [former quarterback Mark] Sanchez from pursuing HIS dreams, it might seem a little disingenuous for him to even be discussing jobs with the NFL"

This is from USC's sports information director, Tim Tesslaone: “Pete’s name comes out at this time every year. In the past, he hasn’t commented on such reports. He was not expected in today. I’ve put a message out to him, but haven’t heard back yet. At this point, we have nothing to report. Perhaps check with the Seahawks.”

Conquest Chronicles, a USC blog, has a fairly measured take here: "Pete Carroll owes us NOTHING! He has given us more than anyone could have expected for all the great games and awards. Pete Carroll has done plenty for USC. He put us on a run that won't ever be matched in college football. But nothing lasts forever and now may be the time."

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian, Carroll's former offensive coordinator, talked to reporters about Carroll potentially joining him in Seattle. Sark said he hasn't talked to Carroll about the situation.

Danny O'Neil's blog for the Seattle Times is worth checking out.

The father of Patriots WR Wes Welker said Sunday his son looked as upset as he's ever seen him after suffering a left knee injury in a loss at Houston.
"I've seen him look like that before," Leland Welker told the Boston Globe. "It was always in a losing effort or something like that. It wasn't a good sign."
Welker went down on his first catch of the game in the Patriots' first drive. He planted his left leg awkwardly, and had to be carted to the locker room after being helped to the sideline.
"We're sick," Leland Welker told the Globe. "We're absolutely sick. We take all those hits and stuff all season long. And then just one fluke cut, and he just blows it out."
The Patriots released no details about the extent of Welker's injury. He led the NFL with 123 catches this season.
His mother, Shelley Welker, told the Boston Herald her son was "very, very upset."
Said Shelley Welker to the paper, "it's one of those where it's a cut he makes all the time. And I don't know what happened. But just say your prayers for him and hope it's not anything bad." -- Sean Leahy

Jets beat Colts to end dream of unbeaten season

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Two triumphs shy of an unbeaten season, the Indianapolis Colts suffered their first National Football League loss on Sunday, falling 29-15 to the visiting New York Jets.

The Colts, who had already clinched a first-round bye and a home-field edge throughout the American Conference playoffs, pulled quarterback Peyton Manning and other starters with a 15-10 lead in the third quarter and paid the price.

Indianapolis was 14-0 and by beating the Jets and Buffalo next week would have become only the third team in NFL history to complete an unbeaten season, after the 2007 New York Giants went 16-0 and the 1972 Miami Dolphins went 14-0.

A 9-3 Colts' half-time lead was erased when New York's Brad Smith returned the second-half kickoff 106 yards for a touchdown, giving the Jets a 10-9 lead.

Donald Brown answered for the Colts on a one-yard touchdown run to give the Colts a 15-10 edge and with concerns over injuries to key players ahead of the playoffs, Indianapolis benched Manning and others with 20 minutes to go.

Having said a playoff run to a Super Bowl crown was more important than an unbeaten regular season, the Colts were true to their word and the Jets, in dire need of a victory to help their playoff chances, took full advantage.

The Jets defense forced a fumble from Curtis Painter, Manning's understudy, and New York's Marques Douglas recovered it for a touchdown that put the Jets ahead to stay.

Mark Sanchez connected with Dustin Keller on a two-point conversion pass to put the Jets ahead 18-15 and Jay Feely kicked a 43-yard field goal to put the visitors ahead 21-15 with 13:23 to play.

The clincher came with 5:38 remaining on a one-yard touchdown run by Thomas Jones and a Sanchez two-point conversion pass for the final margin.
