TEMPE, Ariz. -- With a 14-13 victory against Minnesota in the Insight Bowl on Thursday night, Iowa State locked up its first winning season since 2005.

Minnesota (6-7) made an unwanted bit of history by becoming the first three-time Insight Bowl loser.

"We came here to win the football game and we didn't get it done," Minnesota coach Tim Brewster said. "It's a great group of kids...and their hearts are broke and they're bleeding."

Friday's slate of bowl games feature three Big Ten schools: Northwestern vs. Auburn in the Outback Bowl; Penn State vs. LSU in the Capital One Bowl; and Ohio State vs. Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Michigan State will face Texas Tech on Saturday in the Alamo Bowl while Iowa faces off against Georgia Tech on Tuesday in the Orange Bowl.

Wisconsin beat Miami in the 20-14 in the Champs Sports Bowl earlier.

New York
, December 31 -- A rather bizarre study reveals that women may derive a more pleasurable feeling by slipping into a pair of old jeans than indulging in a sexual intercourse.

A poll of 2200 British women carried out by serial brand Special K revealed that slimming down and fitting into an old pair of jeans again may be a woman’s ultimate fantasy.

Women find fitting into old pair of jeans better than sex
Findings of the survey
revealed that more than a quarter (35 percent) of women confessed to owning a pair of ‘trophy’ jeans they used to wear, kept in a hope to fit in again.

On an average, the participants owned at least five pairs of jeans. Nearly 10 percent of the women even claimed that their jeans outlived their longest relationship regardless of whether it fits them or not.

When asked on how they would feel to fit into old jeans, 29.1 percent of women averred that it would feel better than sex, 28.9 per cent said it would beat a promotion, 20.6 percent thought it would top a best friend's wedding.

Furthermore, 20.3 percent said it would feel better than a lottery win, and 11.1 percent thought it would beat a marriage proposal.

Woman’s fantasies
The poll also revealed that nearly 30 percent of women fantasized more about slimming back into their ''trophy'' jeans than daydreaming about the Hollywood heartthrobs such as George Clooney or Brad Pitt.

Laura Bryant, from Special K, said, ''Women hold a deep attachment to that one pair of jeans which they know they look and feel great in. They use them as a benchmark and a great motivational tool when slimming and it doesn't matter how old the pair is.

"This research shows the sense of euphoria and the endorphin rush women get when they achieve their goal of fitting back into that one special pair of jeans is even better or on a par with some of the other great pleasures in life."

Flag of Telangana Rashtra Samithi. As per the ...Image via Wikipedia
New Delhi: Asserting that the government had done "no flip-flop" over separate statehood to Telangana, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said the January 5 meeting of eight political parties from Andhra Pradesh had been called to devise a "mechanism" and "lay a road map" on resolving the controversial issue.

"There is no flip-flop on part of the government over Telangana," said Chidambaram.

He said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in its common minimum programme had said that a separate Telangana state will be carved out from Andhra Pradesh "at an appropriate time" after due consultations and consensus.

Major political parties in Andhra Pradesh, he said, contested the 2009 Assembly elections on manifestos that "in one manner or other declared support for the formation of a separate state of Telangana".

Referring to two statements he had made on December 9 and on December 23 on the issue, the home minister said, "The central government simply responded to the situation in Andhra Pradesh."

"On December 9, it was announced that an appropriate resolution would be moved in the state assembly. I would like to highlight key words in the statement, they are 'process', 'appropriate resolution' and 'moved'. In the background of the minutes of the all party meeting, I would like to ask what was wrong with that statement," he queried.

And on December 23, after MPs and legislators from the state appeared divided over the issue, the government stressed the need to hold consultations with all political parties on the issue following a fortnight of protests in Andhra Pradesh for and against the separate state.

"We simply responded to the wishes of the people of Andhra Pradesh. I hope you don't call the January 5 meeting a flip-flop," Chidambaram added.

"The January 5 meeting is the first step in consultations. We have called the recognised parties in the state to devise a mechanism and lay a roadmap on the issue," he said.

Chidambaram also pointed out that other student groups and interested parties would also be consulted at a later stage.

Countries around the world are beginning to hold celebratory events to welcome in 2010.

A massive fireworks display has taken place in Sydney, Australia, with some 5,000kg of explosives sent up around around the famous harbour bridge.

New Year's Eve this year will also see a rare blue moon - a second full moon in a month. The next will be in 2028.

The moon will be visible at midnight in the west but not until New Year's Day in Asia and Australasia.

Although it will not actually be blue, the full moon is expected to be a dramatic backdrop for fireworks.

New Year arrived first in the South Pacific. At midnight local time (1100 GMT) fireworks were set off over the Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand.

In Sydney some 1.5 million people were expected to attend the city's dramatic show, with fireworks sent up from the bridge, boats in the harbour and from buildings around the waterfront.

Crowds had been gathering since the early morning, some of them camping overnight to secure the best vantage point for the 12-minute midnight fireworks display.

Police minister Michael Daley warned those attending to avoid excessive drinking.

"If you're one of these fools that can't handle their grog and likes to go out and ruin other people's nights, make yourself a new year's resolution to grow up and behave yourself and start practising that on New Year's Eve," he said.

Map

The Sydney Morning Herald said the display would cost some A$264,000 (US$237,500; £147,000).

'Magical' display

The Japanese capital, Tokyo, will greet the new year in traditional style, with bells rung in temples at midnight.

The city's Sensoji Temple has been draped with banners wishing visitors a happy new year.

No major events were planned on mainland China - which celebrates the change of the lunar new year instead - but a fireworks display will be staged over Hong Kong's waterfront skyline.

Thousands of people are also expected to gather at Indonesia's National Monument for a display.

Despite heavy snowfall and temperatures down to -10C (14F), celebrations were planned for Red Square in Moscow.

"I wish everybody spiritual well-being in the coming year. I wish health to the children and all the best to all in the new year," said one city resident.

In the French capital Paris, the Eiffel Tower will be the scene of a "unique and magical" display, said city officials.

Fireworks stall in Manilla, Philippines (31 Dec 2009)
People bought fireworks in the Philippines to ward off bad spirits

The creator of the show, Bernard Schmitt, told the AFP news agency that one one point the tower would "transform itself into a giant Christmas tree with tinsel".

London's show will focus around the huge London Eye wheel on the banks of the River Thames. Those attending have been warned to prepare for temperatures of around 0C (32F).

Further west, an estimated one million people are expected to be in New York's Times Square to join in the countdown to midnight and see the famous New Year ball descend from its flagpole.

Security is high in the square, with partygoers banned from taking rucksacks or large bags into the area.

"We assume here that New York is the No 1 terrorist target in America," the city's Police Commissioner Raymond W Kelly was quoted as saying by the New York Times.

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif as featured in t...Image via Wikipedia
Trade circles say that Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar was reportedly signed for as high a fee as Rs 71 crore for a film, has had a change of mind.

Reliable market sources say that the entire completion cost of Akshay’s next two films –‘Khatta Meetha’ directed by Priyadarshan and ‘Tees Maar Khan’ directed by Farah Khan will reportedly not exceed Rs 35 crore.

According to one trade source the cost of making ‘Khatta Meetha’ and ‘Tees Maar Khan’ won’t include the actor’s fee.

The same source adds that when Akshay realised that his films ‘Chandni Chowk to China’, ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ and ‘Tasveer’ lost money because of his individual fee as an actor, he decided to make a market correction.

Having studied the current Bollywood trade scene, the actor has decided not to charge a single penny for his films.

However, Akki’s banner ‘Hari Om Productions’ is a co-producer of the films ‘Khatta Meetha’ and ‘Tees Maar Khan’.

The actor explains the logic behind this drastic move of not charging his market fee. He said that for both the films his fees will be Rs.0. If both films are hits, then the production house will stand to benefit by getting a part of the profits. If the film is average, the profit margin will automatically be reduced. And if the film flops, no one will lose money because the budget has been controlled. By not charging his personal remuneration as an actor, he has made sure that these films will at least romp home with no losses.

Trade sources say that the Akshay is being closely watched by all actors who have home productions.

International Cricket CouncilImage via Wikipedia
CHENNAI: The Indian capital is in danger of losing its hosting rights for the 2011 World Cup following a scathing report on the Feroz Shah Kotla

itch after a One-ADay International was abandoned, Indian media reported on Tuesday.

The fifth and final One-Day International between Sri Lanka and India in New Delhi was called off after 23.3 overs on Sunday due to a dangerous pitch upon which the tourists had toiled to reach 83 for five before play was halted.

Match referee Alan Hurst had classified the pitch "unfit", a newspaper reported, quoting from the official's report to the International Cricket Council.

The classification was the worst of six possible categories, the newspaper said, and attracts a suspension of the status to host international matches for a period between 12-24 months.

The International Cricket Council's stringent new rules governing venues came into effect in October this year.

The stadium is due to stage four matches of the World Cup to be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from Feb 19 to April 2, 2011.

"The pitch did not meet the requirements for an ODI match," the paper quoted Hurst's report as saying.

"This meant the players were unsure of what the ball would do. However, of more concern was the dangerous bounce that occurred randomly and accounted for batsmen being struck on a number of occasions.

"The pitch did not allow players to play with any confidence and was totally unsuitable for international cricket."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India had received a notice classifying the pitch as "unfit" and has been given 14 days to respond, the paper said.

The BCCI's response along with the match footage will be reviewed by the ICC's chief referee Ranjan Madugalle and the governing body's cricket operations manager Dave Richardson before a decision is pronounced.

Sports Minister Manohar Singh Gill said the fiasco was shameful for the country.

"It is very unfortunate and a great embarrassment for the country. It should not have happened," he told domestic media.

New Delhi: Aamir Khan created a secret identity on Facebook to promote his new movie "3 Idiots". Megastar Amitabh Bachchan's "Paa" also found a major presence on the internet through his blog and his Facebook fan page.

Move over TV, radio and print. Social networking sites (SNS), with their interactive and cost-effective features, are here as an ideal medium to promote movies. "Internet's role in the promotion of music and films has been highly visible in recent years and it has grown significantly," according to Rahul Sharma, vice president, Brand Solutions, ibibo.com.

Bachchan, for instance, had a promotional application
tool specially created on ibibo.com inviting people to share their stories of father-son relationships even as "Paa" hit the theatres.

"Online promotion of the music album or film encourages new fans and gives a lot of free publicity. It certainly drives the overall sales volume of the product. In addition, it allows them to reach a massive audience," Sharma told IANS.

Nabeel Abbas, CEO of movie marketing firm Epigram, says the internet has gained importance in the last two years as far as film promotion is concerned.

"One can create a discussion forum on the internet as opposed to other forms of marketing where the information is open to only being seen and consumed. The interactivity factor on the internet leads to exponential popularity for a film," said Abbas.

Filmmakers are leveraging the opportunity with fan pages on websites like Facebook, Orkut and Twitter, blogs, by building special official websites as well as by tying up with networking sites like Zapak and Ibibo, which offer various customised applications and games related to a movie.

Gaming portal Zapak.com has tied up with "3 Idiots" and is offering content in line with the movie that primarily targets the youth.

Their website - www.idiotsacademy.com - takes the user to different rooms of Idiots Academy like the director's office, lab, hostel, canteen, class room and also the toilets. Each room on the site offers interactive applications based on the movie.

"Internet and mobile are increasingly becoming preferred destinations for youth. With over 50 percent of India below the age of 25 years, I believe it is imperative for movies to have a strong and concerted digital strategy," said Aamir.

The proposition also turns out to be highly cost-effective for filmmakers.

"If a print campaign costs anywhere between Rs.1 million and Rs.4 million, an average TV campaign could cost no less than a Rs.10 million and a very good TV campaign could be even Rs.40 million, depending on a producer's budget.

"Whereas an internet-based campaign costs almost 10 percent of a TV campaign and offers the added advantage of interactivity," explained Abbas, who recently promoted "Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year" on the digital platform.

Agrees Vishal Chinchankar, assistant vice president, Media, Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

"SNS is a platform that offers the users' point of view. It helps build a brand community compared to other platforms. It's also one of the most cost- effective channels that offers a reach of around 23.5 million active SNS population (figure according to Sept: comScore report)," Chichankar told IANS.

The cast and crew also take initiative to promote films through their personal blogs and profiles on SNS.

Debut director Shawn Arranha sends regular updates about his film "Hide & Seek" to his Facebook followers, while Bachchan often discusses his film projects and tidbits about their making on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.

So do Aamir, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, actress Shilpa Shetty and actor Akshay Kumar. Other actors like Priyanka Chopra, Uday Chopra, Mallika Sherawat and Preity Zinta use their Twitter pages to keep their fans updated about their films and other engagements.

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Home Secretary Ram Niwas has ordered an enquiry against Sacred Heart School where Ruchika Girhotra studied.
The school has been asked to explain the reasons behind Ruchika's expulsion.
"On the complaint of Madhu Prakash (Ruchika's friend Aradhana's mother) we ordered enquiry on Monday. SDM Prernapuri will conduct the enquiry. One of them was whether any showcause notice was issued to Ruchika before expelling her. Any material evidence will be made public and action will be intiated. I think a week's period will be sufficient to find out details," Niwas told CNN-IBN.
After the 14-year-old was allegedly molested by former DGP SPS Rathore, the school authorities expelled her saying she hadn't paid her fees.
However, her father rubbishes these claims and alleges that Rathore used his power to get her expelled.
Incidentially, Rathore's daughter was Ruchika's classmate in the school.
Meanwhile, Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyer Ranjan Lakhanpal on Monday said he would file a PIL against the school for expelling Ruchika on a flimsy grounds.
"I have added Section 305 in the case. Section 305 is much more serious. It is a death sentence and this should be awarded to Rathore," he told CNN-IBN.
Section 305 deals with abetment to suicide of a minor and carries a maximum punishment of death.
"We are seeking enquiry into the whole matter right from when the molestation took place till the time judgement was announced. It took 19 years for the case to be finalised and the judiciary is also responsible for this delay.
"We are also seeking a probe into the role of the judicial officers who cause this delay and also the fact that the HC had ordered way back in 2001 that the trial should be completed in six years and after that also it took nine years for the courts to finalise the matter," said Lakhanpal.

Tamil Nadu is now very industries-friendly, so is Gujarat,” FKCCI president J Crasta said.On December 11, consumer healthcare company Glaxo Smithkline had to temporarily suspend its operations owing to safety concerns. In another incident, protesters attacked a branch of HSBC bank in the coastal city of Vishakapatnam. The chairman of CII, Karnataka, T Parabhraman feels that Hyderabad, which has a lot of thrust on education in the past apart from a strong industrial culture, has very similar roots like Bangalore.“The core engineering strength of Hyderabad is its primary advantage,” he added.“Whether Hyderabad is a part of Telangana or Andhra, it would not matter. However, foreign companies think more from a safety perspective and the lifestyle the city has to offer,” he said.Meanwhile, Karnataka with its new industrial policies, is aggressively pursuing investments. The state has cleared 46 projects, which are expected to invest Rs 1,086 crore, in its high level committee meeting held in October. In its 54th high level clearance committee meeting, it discussed on giving clearance to proposals from 55 new projects, including projects from about five Hyderabad- based companies.

25 killed in Karachi blast

Kamikaze suicide attack on the USS Bunker Hill...Image via Wikipedia
ISLAMABAD: A deadly suicide attack on the main Ashura procession in Karachi on Monday killed at least 25 people and wounded more than 60 people, triggering violence and arson in some parts of Pakistan’s biggest city and its economic nerve-centre.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik confirmed that it was carried out by a suicide bomber.
Wearing the black clothes of a Shia mourner at Muharram, the bomber joined the tail-end of a slow-moving procession of thousands on Karachi’s main M.A. Jinnah Road as it made its way to the Hussainian-e-Iranian Imambargah.
Television footage showed scenes of panic and chaos in the procession in the minutes after the bomber blew himself up. A cloud of thick black smoke rose from the site of the bombing as angry mourners attacked security personnel and journalists. Violence was reported from several other parts of the city in the hours after the bombing.
Mobs set fire to vehicles and shops and homes in parts of the city, even as President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and other political leaders joined clerics in appealing for calm.
In a message, Mr. Zardari said “a deliberate attempt seems to be afoot to turn the fight against militants into a sectarian clash and make the people fight against one another” and asked people not to fall into the trap.
This was the third bombing in Karachi in as many days. Despite the security measures in force in the city for Muharram, a car bomb explosion wounded more than 20 people on Saturday, while another explosion on Sunday injured 30 people and sparked rioting in that area.
Farooq Sattar, a leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement which runs the city government of Karachi and is also a member of the ruling coalition in Sindh province and the centre, said the attack was caused by a security lapse despite the best efforts of the administration to secure the procession.
He described it as an attack to “derail the peace of Karachi, to destabilise Karachi which is the jugular vein of Pakistan, the economic centre of Pakistan”.
In the last few years, the month of Muharram has passed without any major incident in Karachi. Dr. Sattar said Monday’s attack was a “deliberate attempt” to unleash sectarian violence between the Shia and Sunni communities of the city.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Sunni militant groups that target the Shia community have a significant presence in Karachi despite a ban on them since 2002.
Also, over the last two years, the MQM has repeatedly warned of the “Talibanisation of Karachi”, and Dr. Sattar said in the last two years, at least 30 “terrorist networks” had been unearthed by the city police and more than a dozen would-be suicide attackers detained

Barack Hussein Obama takes the oath of office ...Image via Wikipedia
 * Al Qaeda group in Yemen says it gave Nigerian the bomb

* It says device failed on plane due to technical fault

* Obama faces political pressure over security threats (Adds U.S. TV report on images of bomb, paragraphs 8-9)

By Jeff Mason

KAILUA, Hawaii, Dec 28 (Reuters) - A wing of al Qaeda claimed responsibility on Monday for a failed Christmas Day attack on a U.S.-bound passenger plane, and President Barack Obama vowed to bring "every element" of U.S. power against those who threaten Americans' safety.

In a statement posted on Islamist websites, the group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said the attempt was to avenge U.S. attacks on its members in Yemen.

The group said it had provided the Nigerian suspect in the failed airliner bombing with a "technically advanced device" but that it did not detonate because of a technical fault.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, is charged with smuggling explosives on board and attempting to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight as it approached Detroit from Amsterdam on Dec. 25 with almost 300 people on board.

Speaking during a vacation in Hawaii, Obama said, "We will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable."

"We will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, to dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us, whether they are from Afghanistan or Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, or anywhere where they are plotting attacks against the U.S. homeland," Obama added.

Abdulmutallab, who had a valid U.S. visa issued before he was placed on a broad U.S. list of possible security threats, has told investigators that al Qaeda operatives in Yemen gave him an explosive device and taught him how to detonate it, officials said over the weekend.

ABC News broadcast what it described as U.S. government photos of the bomb Abdulmutallab is accused of smuggling aboard the flight in his underwear.

The images showed the slightly burned underwear with a packet of the high-explosive chemical PETN sewn into the crotch and a plastic syringe detonator, ABC said.

AL QAEDA IN YEMEN

The incident has put a spotlight on the growing prominence of al Qaeda in Yemen, which the United States and Saudi Arabia fear will exploit instability in Yemen to stage attacks in the Saudi kingdom, the world's largest oil exporter, and beyond.

The United States quietly has been supplying military equipment, intelligence and training to Yemeni forces, who have raided suspected al Qaeda hide-outs this month, U.S. defense and counterterrorism officials said. [ID:nN28154817]

In a worrisome development for U.S. security, officials have discovered that Abdulmutallab's father warned them of his son's growing radicalism, but the information failed to prevent his traveling to the United States on a two-year visa issued June 16, 2008.

Obama said that as a result of this oversight, he had ordered a thorough review of the screening process.

"We need to determine just how the suspect was able to bring dangerous explosives aboard an aircraft and what additional steps we can take to thwart future attacks," Obama said.

Obama is under pressure from opposition Republicans who have been critical of his response to the Christmas Day scare and have questioned whether his administration is doing enough to contain security threats.

His administration admitted on Monday that the incident represented a failure of air security.

'FAILED MISERABLY'

Asked on NBC's "Today" show if the security system "failed miserably," U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano replied, "It did."

On Sunday, Napolitano said the system to protect air travel worked, but in appearances on news shows on Monday she said she had meant that the response to alert other flights and airports and impose immediate new safety procedures had been effective.

Abdulmutallab was overpowered by passengers and crew on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 after setting alight an explosive device. He was treated for burns and is in federal prison awaiting trial.

Airline stocks fell on Monday as the United States tightened airline security after the incident. AMR Corp (AMR.N), the parent of American Airlines, lost 4.8 percent to $7.75. Shares of Delta (DAL.N), the parent of Northwest, were down 4.1 percent to $11.29. [ID:nN28168827]

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration did not give details of its new security measures. But air travelers described new restrictions on flights headed for the United States, including additional preflight screening, and -- an hour before landing -- a ban on movement around the cabin and on having items such as blankets on passengers' laps.

The agency has since given pilots and flight crews discretion to ease these in-flight restrictions, a source familiar with the TSA rules said on Monday.

Dutch airport authorities said they planned to make new, more sensitive passenger scanners mandatory after Abdulmutallab allegedly smuggled the explosives in his underwear through Schiphol Airport security. The Russian Foreign Ministry has voiced concern over the recent anti-government protests in Iran and said Russia is not meddling in Iran's internal affairs.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday, after protests in Iran on Sunday during the Shia Muslim ceremonies for Ashura, which is the anniversary of the martyrdom of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (PBUH).

At least eight people were killed in clashes between security forces and demonstrators that broke out during the protests, according to the Tehran police headquarters.

The police also said that the police forces neither used violence nor fired a single bullet on Sunday.

“We believe the most important thing in such a situation is to show restraint, and seek a compromise on the basis of the law, and also to take political efforts to prevent a further escalation of the confrontation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry statement added.

The Russians rejected allegations claiming Moscow was involved “in the internal political processes in Iran.”

Commenting on the allegations, the statement said, “We are convinced that this is the work of those opposed to Russian-Iranian cooperation.”

3 Idiots has passed the cinegoer’s test with flying colours. The Aamir Khan
-starrer raked in Rs 12.5 crore on Friday. Experts estimate the movie to net Rs 40 crore over the first weekend from the box office, with gross collections of Rs 65 crore. Khan’s last release, Ghajini, earned around Rs 40 crore net in the first four days, since the movie released on a Thursday. Aamir Khan said: “The response is huge, we are still gathering the enormity of opening collections. To match Ghajini’s opening day collections is something, to surpass Ghajini is completely overwhelming.”

“3 Idiots would set the record for the biggest opening of this year,” added Ashish Saksena, COO, BIG Cinemas. Till date, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Love Aaj Kal topped the chart with net collections of Rs 28 crore on first three days, followed by Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, featuring Katrina Kaif
and Ranbir Kapoor and Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor’s Kambakkht Ishq, both at around Rs 23-24 crore.

Across multiplexes, the movie has witnessed over 95 per cent occupancies. “The film has lived up to expectations. We are hoping the extended holiday on Monday will add to 3 Idiots’ festivity,” confirmed Alok Tandon, CEO, INOX Leisure.

“The movie definitely had a repeat value,” said a media expert. No wonder, the producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, was able to convince theatre chain owners to increase ticket prices 30 per cent for evening shows and almost 100 per cent for morning shows. Ticket prices now range between Rs 300 and Rs 350 per person for evening shows and Rs 100-120 for morning shows. 3 Idiots released with over 1,500 prints in India and 344 prints overseas.
